Synergy not unlocking?

If I understand the wiki correctly (I may not be), the synergy between golbin thief and ent should be unlocked because they are Tier 1 summons that are both at least Mark lv2 and both are equipped. Clicking on locked synergies does nothing.

Any help as to what I am doing wrong or misunderstanding?

so ents and goblins dont have a synergy afaik - not all combinations do. and so far I have only unlocked them with non-combat to noncombat and combat to combat ... ents are non, goblins are fighters

That makes sense and is the information I was missing that I did not see on the wiki (I could have repeatedly missed that line somewhere). Thank you so much!

When you equip 2 Familiars, you can check the circle icon in the equipment screen to see if there is a synergy to unlock.

If the 2 Familiars you have currently equipped can synergize, it will actually tell you there is a locked synergy and the icon will have a red padlock.

So once I know there is a synergy that exists, do I just have to wait on chance for it to unlock?

No. The synergy will unlock once you've fulfilled any requirements. See:
