Is there a reason why I should not train strength only as a new player?
I have auto food, roughly 20 level in strength block and attack. As I understood 40 percent of damage dealt is converted into xp for attack style. So is there any reason why I wouldnt want to pick one quite weak ennemy that can barely hit me and destroy him while training strength?

That's usually the go to when it comes to ones combat, but of course it's purely up to the player to decide how they manage combat, gear &/or their stats

Experience
It's merely determined on the Monster's HP for maximum XP output, the higher the better, but that depends on if you can kill it fast enough, with other factors being chance to hit & respawn times

The Most Known Enemy Early & Mid Game
Giant Crab: It's only level 33 but has 600 HP more than most enemies early/mid game, while some enemies late & end game would be better for grinding, higher stats & gear of course would help you kill them in about the same time as you'd kill the Giant Crab

You can even get it as a Free Slayer Task, so it's immensely helpful in training slayer if it's your go to Monster

I think you earn more exp hitting stronger enemies, iirc it's something to do with how many HP you kill. And I don't think overkill gives exp, only what the enemy has.
Either that or I completely misunderstood how training works, but every guide I've seen has always progressed to stronger enemies instead of taking low attack interval weapons and farming plants.

You can do that. The best, most optimal way though is to fight enemies with more HP because, like mentioned above, you get more XP the harder you hit but if you're one-shotting an enemy the XP gets capped at how much HP the enemy had.

So basically, chickens, for example, are terrible for training because they are just too weak and have too little HP. I think I used cows at low levels since they have 80 HP which is not terrible and have quite low hit chances AND you can farm a bunch of beef and leather from them.

Basically, choose something that is easy to kill with your setup but has as much HP as possible.

2 problems - overkill and respawn time. For skilling combat (prayer and slayer included) you want as beefy enemy as possible so you maximize time of doing damage. That also means you want enemy with somehow low evasion to your attack type.

Picking weak enemy is good only if you dont have food. And if you do so, atleast pick enemy to farm something meaningful, like FEZ.

Thanks for your advices fellas. I'll keep hitting the cow as long as my max hit is less than it's hp, i'll consider other mobs later

Imho farming mobs if you dont need certain drop from them is plain waste. If you want just skilling, get autoslayer upgrade and farm slayer. That way you are skilling combat, but also slayer skill (which is needed for acces to later areas/dungeons). You also get slayer coins which you can use to buy resupply packs which has arrows/bolts, but most importatly food (helps you sustain killing) and bones. So now you can use bones to get prayer points and use prayers (which are BIG deal later).
So at the end, you are skilling combat, slayer and prayer, while prayers also makes killing easier/faster.

You have to have in mind that OP said he's roughly level 20 in combat skills, meaning he almost definitely doesn't have auto-slayer which means doing slayer tasks only matters if he's present while picking a random mob lets him easily train offline. Which brings me to cows - decent super early game XP, you get beef which can be used as food when cooked and you get leather for crafting. At those low levels I wouldn't worry too much about being optimal and min/maxing stuff.

My point exactly, I play other games and just take the loot when I think of it. It's also a nice supply of leather - which ill need for getting the sweet crafting xp. As someone mentionned it, my next farm target is the crab. I dont have enough xp in cooking yet to cook crabs though, so it's something for later

You'll want to get to the spider forest dungeon soon then to farm amulet of looting. No more needing to check back.

It's doable, but due to the respawn interval and maximum damage, the enemy's health also affects the leveling efficiency. The best target is an enemy with high health, a high chance of being hit, and is weak.

Actually, it's not the case, especially with the Abyss DLC; training battle levels with high-level monsters is less efficient than with low-level ones.
