Secondarily, if it shows a Sword Icon, that's Stabbing for Attack XP, Slashing is Strength XP aka the Flexing Arm Icon
Ranged & Magic don't have any alternate styles that would prevent them from being able to earn the mark in question, only Melee
Also you may want to make sure that you may have already gotten a mark, you will need to create a Summoning Tablet of the Mark before you can earn marks again for it
Good Luck & Have Fun
As a final follow up, does Into the Mist have to be completed?
You may be confusing the sword for melee in general, but it's really just using Stab not Slash if you are still unable to get it, I suppose your game could also be bugged, unless you don't own the DLC in question
You don't need to have completed any dungeon, as long as you have the DLC: Throne of the Herald
Be sure you're using the stab & not slash, if the weapon you are using only has slash, you may want to use something that has stab instead
Like I mentioned before, you may want to check & see if you already have the mark, if you do, create one summoning tablet, then you will continue earning them after that
You must create a summoning tablet after you get the mark to earn marks afterwards of any Summoning marks you find
Good Luck & Have Fun
