Town Hall = Trap?
So far it seems to cost me more in repair costs than it's generated in revenue, I'm assuming because of the very hefty price tag.

Am I missing something?

Generating gold is the literal only purpose of it, no?

The gold it generates is in direct proportion to your population, so if it's underperforming then raising the population should help.

I have all of the happiness buildings and all of the population buildings.
With 2 townhalls I generated about 1.1m while AFK and the repair costs (with cape equipped) were 3m for the same time period.

Granted, it's winter, but even at 2.2m that's a loss.

Edit: AFK for 4 hrs, 272k revenue, 800k repairs, though this seems to be 2 ticks somehow. Town hall at 99%, I repaired everything I could besides the town hall and it's 711k to repair the Town Hall and a statue. For some reason I can't repair either of those individually, maybe because the building isn't maxed? But I'm assuming the TH makes up the lion's share of that.

Edit2: Hm, I see now that Winter has -50% GP production, while it only reduces happiness (population) by about 1/5, halving the gold from the TH makes a big difference. With 50% increased repair price during winter, that's especially noticeable.

I still get the feeling that through most of the year, I'm breaking even at best on the tax rate. Spring with -25% repair costs and Summer with +25% GP and -10% repair costs would probably be the best seasons and with the numbers I've seen even adjusting for those bonuses, I don't see it as a money maker.

In Spring I'd in theory have made roughly 675k in two ticks and paid 426k in repairs for it. Compared to how much I'm losing in an equal amount of time during Winter, it doesn't add up.

Township prints money after you max it out. It's a net negative initially, but after you have a few town halls, you can just jerk off while those town halls slowly pay for the next ones or you can keep gold-farming to push them out faster. When you're ~110 and the Township is completely maxed, gold becomes this irrelevant thing you don't even think about, and when I say maxed, I just mean all buildings constructed. You can get further boosts to township from gold-generation gear and astrology, but that stuff is just extra.

A lot of other things become irrelevant as well because of the trader. You never need to mine coal again. You won't need to cook food for combat because your town will generate T1 food-boxes faster than you can eat the contents. You can delete all your low-tier ores and wood and save bankspace because they're immediately available at the trader. Plus it gives you a lot of easy access consumables for your skills, which aren't as good as what you'll find in other skills like Archaeology, but it does mean your consumable slot (and later your potion slot) is never empty.

I personally had no issues levelling township, and was pretty inefficient on the first go because I didn't know where the bottlenecks were going to be. I also assumed picking no god would let me pick a god for free later (it doesn't), and didn't appreciate how much of a ball-and-chain Nothing was going to be. I fixed that later on my other characters by choosing Aeris, who basically doesn't have any negatives and massively accelerates the levelling process.

Generally the people I have seen have problems with Township are those that just let it languish for long periods of time; crippling their town with health debuffs and repair costs. But it's like all the other skills; you have to intentionally give it your focus for some period of time.

- Focus on the material generation buildings first, emphasising planks/rock and ignoring blacksmiths. Food you won't need much of until the last tiers of cottages.
- Always keep the health and repair maxed out.
- Do as many casual tasks as you can while you're in the early stages where you're trying to grow the town.
- If you picked a god, go for worship breakpoints.

I read into it and it's bad because they nerfed it when the DLC expansion came out and I don't have that, thinking to myself I wanted to try the base game first before adding new features.

Getting more of them gives the same tax revenue for each as far as I can tell but also seems to increase the repair cost proportionally as well, so if one isn't making money, two won't.

There also seems to be some RNG on which building(s) need repairs each tick.

They nerfed it when the DLC released, but having the DLC or not has no impact. It still prints money if you're willing to invest a fortnight grinding gold and casual tasks.

This is while training a skill that doesn't earn any money, and it doesn't factor in all the town resources generated which can be converted at the trader for even more gold.

I built it last and it's been pure profit. Combined with selling off the excess trade goods, it's a reasonable amount of income unless you're a billionairre.

You lose money in winter, fall usually breaks even, spring and summer you rake it in. Overall it is a positive gain.

As others have said, selling trade goods is the serious money maker for the town stuff.

I have everything repaired by hand, there is nothing left, but why this thing is still asking for a repair? My tax rate and resource generation are unaffected. I pressed "repair all" and nothing changed

Buildings show their HP in the top-left corner, above the icon. A bunch of your buildings are below 100%.

Repair All should fix your problem. Try it again.

I have my first Townhall now. Till now I always just skipped the repair in winter and repaired all in spring. Does someone know if it would be better moneywise to do repairs in winter with one or more townhall? or is skipping them till spring a good way to save some money?
