As a strictly magic character you will struggle agains ranged enemies, because they do more damage and you do less to them. You'll also be ineffective against other magic enemies, because they have high magic evasion, which means you'll waste tons of runes on missed attacks.
ALT magic is also great for gaining magic exp + prayer points (to use in combat to gain prayer exp) with the spells bone offering / blessed offering / holy invocation 1 - 2 - 3.
i highly recommend for any player to max Astrology first, get the masteries all to 99 / upgrade them. its a huge boost to every other skill in many many ways, including combat with accuracy / hidden levels etc, google the astrology buffs / astrology wiki to see what you gain in every skill
^ A definite must, if not playing in Adventure Mode, you have instant access to all features regarding Astrology and to make benefits of it early on
Good Luck & Have Fun
so for an example, (adventure mode) if your combat level is 50, and you've unlocked mining, you can mine upto mythril. you wont gain any mining skill exp past 50 untill your combat level raises BUT your mastery of a skill goes above the level 50 limit. so you can mine mithril and get to 99 mastery if you want.
very very very useful for early ADV mode for things like thieving. as you gain passive stealth from mastery levels so you never fail a pickpocket on lower targets like men / women / goblins etc as you can gain a free 174 stealth (99 mastery) as well as 99% extra gold find (not including if you find the pet / other items from thieving)
So I should definitly train my other combat skills I see :)
Shall I actually have magic / ranged and melee or just magic / melee is enough ?
You can get by with melee only until God Dungeons though really.
