How does mastery pool EXP/checkpoints work?
Checked the wiki, I'm definitely doing it right, except for the little tooltip at the top that says mastery pool EXP can only be used to upgrade items.

I assumed this was a lockout for free accounts, but I own the game on steam now. (Turns out killing cows for 3 hours is more satisfying than I thought.) And it's still there.

What am I doing wrong? Is the wiki out-of-date or so I just not understand how checkpoints work? I have 70-something for firemaking and did not get any GP for burning...

Mastery is a per skill experience pool that can be spent on items related to that specific skill (in the case of Firemaking: logs) or kept.
Every time you burn a log, your earn Skill XP and Mastery XP for that item and Mastery Pool XP.
It's probably easier to have a look at production skills the amounts are displayed there.

Mastery Pool Exp two uses:
You can spend it on item. You're trading Mastery Pool XP for Mastery XP for a specific item.
Keep it and unlock bonus at 10, 25, 50 and 95% of the maximum (those bonus are only active if you keep that percentage of Mastery XP in the pool).

In the case of Firemaking to earn gold while burning a log you'd need your mastery pool to be filled to half: that's 2,250,000 Mastery Pool Xp.

Thanks. That's what I thought... Also turns out I was looking at the EXP wrong. My eyesight isn't very good so I thought I had more than I did.

Edit: Actually, what's the point of spending mastery skill XP on a skill to level it up? I think I'm reading right that it gives XP bonuses when the Mastery is higher?

There is no use for mastery points beyond 95%, so you don't lose anything by boosting your lagging skills a little. It helps quite a lot.
