Every time you burn a log, your earn Skill XP and Mastery XP for that item and Mastery Pool XP.
It's probably easier to have a look at production skills the amounts are displayed there.
Mastery Pool Exp two uses:
You can spend it on item. You're trading Mastery Pool XP for Mastery XP for a specific item.
Keep it and unlock bonus at 10, 25, 50 and 95% of the maximum (those bonus are only active if you keep that percentage of Mastery XP in the pool).
In the case of Firemaking to earn gold while burning a log you'd need your mastery pool to be filled to half: that's 2,250,000 Mastery Pool Xp.
Edit: Actually, what's the point of spending mastery skill XP on a skill to level it up? I think I'm reading right that it gives XP bonuses when the Mastery is higher?
There is no use for mastery points beyond 95%, so you don't lose anything by boosting your lagging skills a little. It helps quite a lot.
