You are absolutely correct - it is a total bottleneck and it is for a really long time.

You basically have three options outside of just mining more coal.
1 - You can grind up on Silver and Gold bars (really just gold) because it doesnt need coal until you get the Cape which halves coal requirements
2 - You can Mine till you get THAT cape and you get one coal whenever you mine anything
3 - You can work on Alt Magic till you get super good at that and can smelt with no coal.

None of those are great, they require a LOT of grinding and levels, but the are options. Personally, I would just mine coal overnight every few days till you dont need as much anymore (thats what I did).

Familiars and potions can help you output too, I believe...

No potion directly helps, the mining potion (Perfect Swing) just adds HP to mining nodes so mining just takes less time. With how quickly coal comes back though it isn't super helpful.

As for Summoning the Mole gives a 3% chance for +1 ore, so not much help. There may be a Summoning Synergy but I have most of the Mole's unlocked and none help yet. I'm only missing the lvl 90 Summons so maybe one of them will, but that isn't any closer than the other suggestions above.

Every little bit of improvement helps though, and you can level up herbology and summoning as well...

OH! Im actually wrong, I somehow managed to miss the Mole/Pig Synergy. It gives you a greater chance to burn food and gives 100 coal ore per burn. That could help a lot at lower levels.

I got most of my coal by doing firemaking. I suppose the problem is later in the game or you didn't do a lot of firemaking?

The amount of coal you need is SO high - 12/bar by Dragonite - so eventually, even with the Firemaking Cape, it is way less efficient than just mining coal normally.

I had maxed Firemaking and still chose to max Alt Magic and just used the spell because it was so much faster to make runes than to mine/smelt.

If there was an underground game ruining black market, I would gladly trade you 600k coal for a specific pet or two

When you get the Smithing Skillcape (get Smithing to 99) this becomes 6/bar.

With Alt Magic 95 it becomes 0/bar but that doesn't really address the issue of needing coal to get there in the first place.
