The Mastery Pool XP should go up as you level the familiars mastery. The highest level for a familiar I got is level 90 which produces 273XP (this includes some boosts from Agility and equipment). But you are right, that it will still take tons of crafted familiars to reach that 10 million mark.
I didn't focus too much on the XP or anything from the Summons I was using since I knew I had to do all of them eventually just to get full Marks. Once I had of them I just made some quick money with the Leprechaun and the Goblin Thief to round out the skill.
Using the tablets up in combat doesn't give summoning XP, which seems silly to me given how expensive and slow it is to create tablets.
Using Familiars, in any situation whether combat or non-combat, DOES give Summoning XP and always has.
In fact, the XP you get for consuming the Tablets is generally better than the XP you get for making them. Although, you do not get Mastery XP from any source but Tablet creation.
