Getting killed for no reason?
Was fighting Wicked Greater Dragons. My auto-eat triggers at 408. The Wicked Greater Dragon's max hit on me was 336. WTF killed me? Lost my Ancient Crossbow... :shit:

It's possible that the GUI doesn't display the correct damage for confusion.
What is your own maximum damage when fighting it?

If it isn't that, are you sure you didn't ran out of food?

You may want to consult the special attacks of an enemy monster and take that into account also, max hit is irrelevant with a special attack that does ???? damage with whatever effect that may be, if that is the case, then it's solved, otherwise, I guess a bug report may be needed for insight for the future, at least I wouldn't want to die on my HC character due to a bug in any case

Did you die during online or offline combat?

The amount of damage the Wicked Greater Dragon changes according to your own max hit. If you do a lot of damage in one hit, so will the dragon. Things like prayer affect this too, so be careful with those.

If you died during offline combat, it's a known bug that's been talked about on the Discord group and something I've encountered several times myself. For some reason the first monster you're offlining is calculated as having melee damage, even if it isn't. If you're using ranged against magic and go offline, this causes the combat triangle to switch against you (for the first monster only), and you can die because of it. If this is the case, I suggest always having a cloud save, and if you see you died offline when you shouldn't have, just load the cloud save instead and hope you're not dead there.

It was during online combat right in front of my face. I think I assumed the max hit from the enemy was the max hit. 75% of my max hit was way above my auto-eat threshold. I wish the description and the "max hit" numbers shown by the enemy were representing the real damage output capable of the enemies attacks. Is this an oversight? Why have the info if it doesn't reflect what is going to happen to my character? If it just had the description I wouldn't have chanced it, but since it says "max hit" with a number well below my auto-eat threshold I went for it. Lesson learned I guess. :shit:

Thanks for the replies gang.

it's just that special attacks when used by the enemy aren't calculated in the max hit as it's not a 100% guarantee to happen and it has to activate also with a success chance, the max hit is based off a normal attack of any enemy, since special attacks are descriptive to have a specific effect & damage calculation specifically specified

Is this right when considering the Wicked Greater Dragon's special attack? Assuming my max hit is 1000. Special attack = 75% of 1000 so 750. If my damage reduction is 50% shouldn't the max damage from the special attack be 375?

I would assume that too. But considering the death penalty in Melvor I'd probably keep a back up save just in case.
