Can I play a public match with my friend?

So I want to play a match with my friend but there's only 2 of us. Is there anyway we can get in the same public match? Thanks.

Unless you get lucky and get into the same match that is a no.
The only way to 100% confirm you get in the same game is friend play.

By that do you mean we would have to click the world button at the same time? I also hope they add some kind of 'party' system in the future.

Even if you do click it at the same time it doesn't guarantee that you 2 will be in the same match. For now stick with friend player for 100% guarantee that you will be in the same match. Until the daily playerbase of DD:M&M is bigger for servers or any other related features stick with that and share the invite code on the DD:M&M discord server so people can join in.
