I thought I could push a little further North using the peaks of Mostad and Vaeroy as a way to guide my course. (Like the vikings :)

Okay so this part I did not expect - and fair warning you may not want to see what might be 'work in progress' (I'm spelling that out)

And one more:

Oh, and it's not a shoal since I could travel through it.

We have to wait and see what's coming.
I'm pretty shure they will expand the map alot when we get bigger ships, at least when we get container ship.
Cool pictures btw.
Interesting video too, have to watch it later.
Maybe at some point not to far off we can see those types of effects realtime in game. Perhaps some of the settings and techniques could be useful for SAS in some small way.
Hope springs eternal :)
Here's a screenshot of one of my predicaments:

Well had to add a title seemed as good as any :)

Guess I'll never deliver THIS cargo...
Edit: Just discovered, the save I made near the 'whirlpool' like construct is considered valid and reloads my position from where I saved it. That's a loooong way from the corner of the legit map.
So even though saving a position off map in SAS is possible. I wouldn't rely on it.
Still... kind of bonus
How about the steering?
The boat is indeed very low in the water.
Edit: One other idea that could make going thru such areas less predictable would be a period of inconsistent steering (harsh but perhaps would emulate unpredictable current effects) Maybe in combination?
Another though on gravity points makes me think of maglev systems.
If you could trigger gravity points in a sequence the boat would follow - it would emulate a current - right?
Btw, I had to change my profile picture when You mentioned Vikings, and I am from, and live in the northernmost city in the world.
Nice are you one of the 1,000?
Oh, btw I just jumped back to the game and the boat was sometimes doing things like hovering partly over the water - so some strange unrealistic things are going on.
Back on the gravity point sequence,
I think the way to go about it would be to set a trigger point near where you might expect a current. Once the trigger point is hit - it turns on the first gravity point that causes the boat to drift towards it. Momentum should do most of the work.
Once near that point (either through a timing sequence or another trigger) that gravity point turns off and another ahead of it turns on - and so on...
Hammerfest got the status as a city in 1789.
Yes, I know there is some cities farther north, like Honningsvåg near Northcape (Nordkapp), and got status as a city in 1996, and they call themselves as the city by nordkapp (Byen ved Nordkapp).
And Longyearbyen as You mentioned, plus a couple more, but never got status as the Northernmost.
Edit: Longyearbyen is an administration center for Svalbard, but haven't status as a city.
It is some places farther north of Hammerfest, but without status as a city.
Honningsvåg is a city farther north with status as a city, but is not taken for the real one, just had the status since 1996.
I know Longyearbyen has the world's northern-most post office
By the way frosen, have you tried their older game, called FIshing: Barents Sea? Hammerfest is featured there, as a 'main base'
A lot to learn about different places - and we know Google isn't always up to date on the granular stuff. Also your handle makes perfect sense now :)
Does Hammerfes have a larger population?

Longyearbyen has the world's northern-most post office? I guess the mail has to go somewhere before it gets to Santa :)
Was thinking some more about simulating currents.
I remember playing a game called Virtual Skipper 5 that allowed editing the currents and wind patterns on any of it's maps(you could even make your own maps). It had small arrows you could reposition to change the direction of the wind or current. It was a racing and sailing sim - but that was the ONLY time I have seen anything with currents in a game that wasn't scripted in some way. If anybody else has seen anything similar, please chime in.
So on the idea of gravity points to simulate the effect of a current, there might be a few different ways to go about it. I mentioned one above but there can be variations that could also work.
Take for example this simple light chaser effect and imagine - instead of a light flicking on and off in circles (or whatever direction), it was a gravity point.

Any boat entering that area would be swept into the perpetual forward movement of the gravity points and be carried along with it. Depending on placement and strength of the grav points, I could see creating grav point spirals that could help emulate the behaviour of a boat caught in a whirlpool.
Areas that have narrow passes could use this technique to cause a boat to rush faster though those areas simply by a trigger that turns on and off a sequence of a few such points.
Yes, was a lot of discussions in the beginning, (1996), but today almost nobody up here care about it.
I bought Fishing Barents Sea and Fishing North Atlantic many years ago, and just tested them a little bit. Looks like nice games.
I have not play them much, cause at that time the life was in the way.
I'm shure I will play them at a later time.
It's much minigames in them, but many players like theese games.
Not much Sim like needing manouvering the boats close to docks for mooring, the buoys for fishinggear have info about time in sea when pointing at them on the map, and so on.
I like as much Sim as possible, keep an eye on everything by myself, like in the real World.
The gutting seems to work very well, and You can by better knifes for better quality.
You can buy bigger boats, and a lot of different fishinggears.
I think both of them have fasttravel.
Remember, this is finished games, and I'm shure we get a lot of stuff in SAS in the future.

You're right about Google.
Hammerfest have a population of about 10.000, and Honningsvåg about 2.500, so we are not big cities.
Hammerfest have Isbjørnklubben, and Honningsvåg have Nordkapp.

Santa's post get to and from Svalbard, Longyerbyen by plane between Longyearbyen and Tromsø, and Longyearbyen and Oslo. I think at least one plane daily.
Interesting thoughts about the currents, we have to wait and see.
