Waves are WAY TOO BIG and boat physics are ass
There are never waves 5m+ waves on a casual day in Norway. Even with one of the biggest boats in the game currently, you are FLYING at 13 knots. Boat physics are awful, you hit a wave and your boat either looks like it's sinking, or you fly several ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ meters in the air, it doesnt make any sense.

Yes, dozens of us on this forum have reported this problem. The boats behave as if they had no mass, no inertia. We've been saying it for months, but the devs keep turning a deaf ear. They prefer to make announcements about future ships and features. I don't understand this silence. All they can promise is that we'll (one day) be able to regulate the force of the waves ourselves, without understanding the real problem. I'm OK with big waves (although not 95% of the time), but boats have to behave properly in them. Anyone who has seen a ship in a storm at least once in his life knows that real ships split waves, not ride them. Today, we can only join our prayers that the devs wake up, read this forum and finally do what's necessary.

I haven't played this yet, but I hope people aren't complaining that it's harder to steer a ship than a car or a truck. I'll give the game a try soon, and I hope the developers don't simplify any aspects of a physics-based game to cater to arcade gamers. I've read some reviews where people said the ships don't behave realistically, and they claim to own a 'ship.' But who uses the word 'ship'? If I owned one, I'd say I have a yacht or a boat. No one owns a 'ship' unless they run a cruise line.

like many people commented before, wave is not the problem, boats that lack of weight and inertia is the issue.

I was actually hoping the developer will fine tune this mechanics and also the missions before they move to the other updates. I thought a better see sailing experience can provide much positive feedback and make the game much enjoyable.

This is not at all the case. The physics as they are are just pretty ass. If your boat dips below a wave, the game deforms the wave immediately around your boat to keep your boat "above" the water, meaning you can end up several meters below the wave with "walls" of water surrounding your boat. It looks incredibly stupid.

The game is basically unplayable. I've piloted boats from 25ft cabin cruisers on the Norfolk Broads to 200ft fishing boats in the North Atlantic. If I took a boat out that behaved like these do, I would scuttle the damn things. I keep coming back every so often to see if anything has improved and surprise...nothing changes. You would think after 2 previous games on the water the devs might have some sort of clue about how this stuff works. Or, maybe they just don't give a s*** apart from getting money in.

agreed once i seen the water walls my gosh its hard to unsee i do hope the boat physics get worked on asap sooner rather than later, but the big waves have to stay.

I brought the flat bottom boat and on my way back the waves were so large i could do micky flips in it.

as soon as you are flying all over the screen this means ease of the throttle slow down.
Do not hit the waves and 100% slow down and surf the waves.

this is just like real life you hit a large wave 100% throttle many of them will damage your boat

slow down seriously you will find it makes a big difference.

Well, I’ve been playing for a couple of days now, and I haven’t run into any major bugs yet. The key is to save game often. I didn’t see the storm in the docks; the devs mentioned they fixed the big waves there, and they only happen in open water. So far, I’m really enjoying it, especially the cargo missions and picking up trash. Every time I collect something, it feels like a win - I even shouted with joy once! The graphics are stunning. As for the physics, I wouldn’t say the ships act like corks in water; there’s some inertia, but it’s not too much. I’d probably tweak it a bit more, but I guess they know what they’re doing. I don’t have much real-life sailing experience, just a little bit.

So, let me poke some players who've probably gotten some progress. Just picked it up on the sale, got myself out of the Rowboat and into the 40k kr starter cargo boat, and I SWEAR the rowboat is more responsive. And by that I mean, the thing bobs like a cork in modest waves (the keel leaves the water!), and has all of the maneuverability of a ROCK unless I'm running the engine at FULL and has a blistering speed of five whole knots.

Are the boats further up the list better? Should I focus on getting through some engine upgrades? Or should I set the title down for a bit? Because this boat is so unresponsive that wave-action just shoves it into the piers and dock walls.

I keep looking to buy and this stops me every time. Nothing anyone has said about it is convincing me.

Hello Admiral - ordinary deck hand here ..
IMO - for any boat in SAS :

- upgrade propeller and engine as soon as you can ..
(my advice - if you can afford in the game - go straight for best upgrade available ..
- take a loan if you don't want to grind - because you cannot refund/sell smaller upgrades ..)
(take advantage of using "Save" slots - you have 10 of them - use it for refining your strategy early in the game.. ;-) )

- early in the game - don't waste money on thrust levers and wheel - those are just cosmetical - no handling improvements - as stated in their description ..

- latter - you can consider upgrading fuel tank and investing some skill points for "ECO drive" ..

by the time you get your hands on Flippy and 2500 hook long lines - your financial troubles will be over ..
(even more with Dr.Phill and fish farming - this is extremely boring and tedious - but financially also VERY rewarding - you will prepare for tier 3 ships ..)

happy sailing ..

and @hektor - it was discussed earlier - you just need to search a bit for "upgrades" .. ;-)

wave height is fine, pretty much how they are in the Ocean up North.

The boats though need a lot more "weight". And some mean of actually steer the damned corks.

Please explain? I really don't get it.

I may not be the best person for advice on this game other than what I have read in the forums and Steam conversations, and Steam reviews and I've read all of them. I just bought this as well knowing they rarely put their games on sale and that a new update is coming soon on the experimental branch on Steam. I'm thinking it might be best to wait and actually play when the update drops or even after it drops along with a couple bug fixes.

I have played a great deal of early access games through their entire life cycle, and I know from watching that this game will only be financially successful if the devs make the simulation part and feel of each ship being authentic their number one priority. And then iterate on that solid base. I will know if I should refund within 2 hours of the next update.
