long line fishing tips?
I am not really looking for specific location tips but I am just getting started with fishing and I don't even know what kind of bait I should buy.

How does one go about deciding on what bait to buy and where to go fishing is there like a general strategy for going about this?

Do I just buy any random bait and head out to the main ocean?

If you do your job right you will earn a lot of money for example i have 4 longlines with 2500 hooks so the longest ones and if i reel 4 of them in i make round about 800k Kronas. I wish you fair seas and always a hand with water under the keel.

aim for halibut they pay the best and are the easiest to use the hook on from my experience , use 2500 hook longlines, although they do take a while to set (1.5 NM each i believe) its worth the time over doing the smaller ones more often

dont get frustrated when you dont hook them coming in... you should still get fish in the boat... hold the I key,. select boat to see fish.. get as much as you can and then sell all

What do you do if you’re casting your long line in a strait line and you end up leaving the area where the fish appear on your fish finder?

Do you just keep laying it out strait or do you do a 180 and head back in?

Holy Wall of Text, Redeemer. Good try to explain but hard to read, ill try to format:
Preparation
  • buy the little fishing boat
  • equip it with long line rigging in the shipyard
  • consider to upgrade the engine 1 step and the to the goldfish propeller
  • buy a hook at the shop, it must fit into your personal inventory, if that is full you are out of luck currently
  • go to the fishing marked buy 4 1000 hook longlines
  • buy bait (herring for halibut) or for whatever fish you want to catch (currently the bait does not get used up, so buying one brick is enough. its ok if it lands in the boat inventory)
find a fishing ground
open the map and scroll around, you see various fishing grounds on the north and south end of the map. check that your fish of choice is available there, currently Halibutt seems to give good money but you can wager between range to fishing ground and fish available there.
Now plan your route and navigate to the fishing ground, remember that the game has realtime distances so 6nm takes you quite a while. Also make sure to have enough fuel and enough real time time, as the fishing trip will take like 2h and you currently cant save while the longlines are in the water (you can but they disappear).
Its really a long drive, be mentally prepared for that.

cast the longlines
Switch your minimap to sonar mode and activate the sonar with J. When you drive around in the fishing area you will see on the sonar when fish are below you (and which fish, identify the icon with the pictures in the help menue)
  • to bait your lines go to your inventory by pressing (I) left klick on your bait than klick on use, now you hold your bait in your hands
  • look at your longline bucket and when it says place bait press e, place the bait on all longlines, you see the bait in the bucket.
  • place the baited longline on the back of your ship and start casting it
  • drive forward in a straight line, reccomended is 4-6kn but i doubt the speed makes a diffrence currently
reel in the lines
After you droped your longline wait 15 to 17 h, use the clock in your steering house to advance time don't sit ingame for 15h and wait.
After the time has passed move your boat so that one of the longline end bouyes is on the starbord (right) side of your boat close to your boat and more or less in the middle of your boat.
Go to the longline hauler and start hauling the longline by clicking on the center bolt of the hauler. Now comes the triky part with the hook: When the fish gets pulled out of the water leftclick to catch it with the hook. If you manage you pick it up with the hook and get a satisfying animation where the fish hangs on your hook and you swing it in. If you miss dont worry, try with the next fish. Hooking right gives you a catch bonus, eaven if you dont hit any fish you still catch something but like 10% less.
return home
When you check the inventory with I you can switch to Boat inventory and there you see your fish, if you think you have enough or run out of time check that you have collected all longlines.
Drive back to the home port, you can sell the fishes at the fishery in Rost or in Vaeroy, if that is closer to you.
If you do your job right you will earn a lot of money for example i have 4 longlines with 2500 hooks so the longest ones and if i reel 4 of them in i make round about 800k Kronas.

Of course the 2500 hook lines give more fish but they are verry long and often longer than the fish swarm, i would start with the 1000 hook lines as the money is still good.

Nice info. I farmed up money with deliveries so I decked out the little fishing boat and went with 2500 hook lines.

When laying out your 2500 lines if it goes past the fish area do you just finish it out strait or is it worth doing a 180 and heading back in, or should I 180 after the second long line buoy deploys?

I only tried to fish once so far and when I ran outside of the range of fish I reloaded my game and it bugged the area for me, I probably just needed to sail away and come back again but still curious what to do when my lines are longer than the fish area.

Nice formatting. You did however miss an extremely important part.

I tried longline fishing for the first time this evening and hooking is very fiddly. The in-game help merely states to aim for the head. However, aiming for the mouth is key.

That part I believe is incorrect. On my first longline I aimed for the head (as the game help instructed) and attempted to hook several times and missed every fish. When the haul was finished, I had ZERO fish in my ship. It was only on my second line that I finally managed to figure out where to hook the fish and caught the last two. This tells me that if you are not successful in hooking the fish, you do not get any fish.

There is a book on the dash of the boats and if you look under 'Fishing' and then 'Bait' it tell you what bait is best for what fish. It also tells you when months are best for the types of fish. Just read the instruction book on the dashboard of the boats and you'll do great. I had NO IDEA what the hell I was doing, then I bought the cheap cargo boat, read the book on the dash and then did a lot of grinding. Bought a fishing boat, checked out the book again and went long lining. Head in a straight line over the fish habitat icons and that's it. I still have no idea what the Sonar is telling me, but I made $450,000 on my first run, so it's not that hard. This is someone with 6,500 hours in 7 Days to Die, so if I can do a game where you have to think a little, anyone can. :steamhappy:
