I suggest prioritizing coal on ship once you are up to maybe 4 or 6 cans of food. On my good endings run, I had maybe 8 coal, no timber, and 3 ale.
If you take Zach's gun, you can get an extra food on small game, but the small game feeds so few, I often skipped them and prioritized bigger game. If you let Zack keep his gun you can get an achievement at the end.
The 2 digging gear makes your dogs more efficient, and possible to scout 3 times and do 1-2 hunts depending on the game.
The big seals that are dangerous can be used to cure freezing.
Runt can be converted to an engineer or medical assistant. I picked engineer to help with freezing.
