The bonus episode shouldn't be played before Life Is Strange, but the three episodes of the main game can be played before or after.
i honestly think that the bonus episode should be played before starting before the storm. i get it might be considered as spolier for life is strange, but to me having a contextualization helps into understanding the emotional part of the narrative.
The bonus episode Farewell would probably be boring because you don't know the characters and not much exciting happens. But as others have already mentioned, you can then make unbiased decisions in BtS without knowing whether they fit the story of LiS.
In LiS you can then (perhaps) better understand Chloe's appearance.
