I like the starting cards, a few changes and you have a deck that moves enemies around as you want. But I really havent tested the other starting decks yet.
All my best results are with Aggressive that I tailor for a bit with each new card (more control, more reach, better mobility).
I like Trickster but it's harder to tailor and play in general and I only reached the final mission with it once, I think).
My worst results are with Counter-Attacker. It's extremely slow IMO and I constantly miss rewards that are time-based.
So, I basically play only Aggressive and Trickster. And I still haven't beaten the game. But after 40 hours I still learn the game. For example, I just today found out that Taunt, in fact, is amazing because it can target anyone, not just an enemy near you or on the same line with you.
Plus I have gotten the farthest on the Counter Deck.
Trickster does amazing if you can pick up an extra Grapple and some get out of trouble cards like Slip, ones that moves through/past enemies, or stun effects (for the rifle guys). Toss in some kicks/pushes and you're a dangerous man with a ledge around you. Gravity is definitely the MVP of a Trickster run.
Counter really seems to need some specific enhancements to make it through the final stage, like the block increase and the damage reduction ones, so it would be a lot more viable if we were able to choose enhancements (or have a choice between 2, something like that) instead of receiving them randomly.
I got my first win with Counter. It's definitely slow in the beginning and you need a lot of extra cards to get it popping, but when you've gone through every level and every card you have is upgraded and synergized with eachother it's a beauty.
I hate trickster. I feel like half of the cards you start with are pure trash, but maybe I just don't know how to play it.
Of the rest - so far my favorite is Counter-Attacker, maybe because I like the style and feel myself unstoppable and tanky. As well as its mechanics and the starting hand, in my opinion, are very good for it's style and do not require many changes, but just polishing and improve what you already have.
Trickster is also kinda fun to play. But that's not really my thing.
And besides, as for my opinion, there are too many trashy and useless cards in the starting hand, in which there is almost no synergy. So it is very difficult to start for it. And you need to make a lot of changes before make it good. Most often I died on Trickster - it was exactly the early levels.
So I beat the game for it once, and that will be enough for me.
And... Balanced - is... balanced?
That's all I can say. And I don't really know how I feel about it.
You would have to either allow for better block/counter scaling, or rework how countering works by replacing the block value with a "negate x incoming attacks" instead of going by damage. I think it would suit the pacing of the game better and let you actually tank in the last stages of the game instead of having to swing around and suddenly become a repositioning/attacking deck.
(my favourite deck is between Aggressive and the Counter Deck )
Trickster has quite a few subpar cards but it has the potential for crazy draw power.
