I feel like playing against GnuGo makes me stupid.
I don't know exactly how to explain this, but like.... GnuGo's go is so bizarre. It seems to tenuki just all the time, it never responds where you think it's going to. So I'll make a threat, it gets ignored so I follow up. And sometimes it pushes things that my experience playing against people tells me don't matter, so I ignore and get something bigger or more urgent.... and then lose by like 70 points in the end.

I feel like playing against this AI throws off my counting and global board sense to such a degree that it's just very strange and not even that fun. It feels like we're playing two different games.

What's uh... what's the deal here.

I'm a little confused by your examples. You stated that it's not responding to a local threat and playing elsewhere, and also playing needless moves next to your stones which you're able to ignore. Since both of these are positive towards your win chance, as in you can punish it for not responding, and also play bigger moves when your local response is not required, where in the match are ending up losing the 70 points? Since it is still winning, are you sure that those threats really require a response and moves that you can tenuki really should tenuki? Is a move really a threat if ignoring it goes unpunished?

I am not trying to say the GNUGo plays perfect by any means. It will make mistakes, as it's a much lower rank. It may ignore a threat that KataGo would have responded to, and it will not always play the biggest moves. KataGo in this situation is the model for perfect play and there's a large gap between it's skill level and GNUGo's skill level.

That's exactly what I mean, haha. Losing to it feels like it comes out of nowhere, it feels very strange to have it happen. Suddenly I realize that I just have no way of beating it despite it playing very strange weak moves the whole game. That's why I say I feel like it makes me stupid.

How are you determining that the opponent's moves are weak though, or are weaker than yours? If they're the moves that lead to a win, one would think they're not as weak. If the AI's bad moves go unpunished, it would seem that they're really not bad moves for that level of play since they lead to a win.

My suggestion would be to go back and review your match to see what went wrong and where it happened. This can be done in the campaign mode by clicking the review button, or in quick match by saving the match record (top right disk icon) and going to saved matches within quick play. Once in review, you can use the analysis features at the top right to see what alternate moves and variations would be possible, as well as see the estimated win rate and score change move to move with the graphs. The next release will also be improving the review functionality, allowing you to play out and test your own variations as well as some other new features.
