They do a pretty poor job of laying any of that out. The odd thing is, I've noticed when I'm leaving port and heading out, I go 20 knots from time to time, but then it slows down to 10 or so, then goes back to 20-22, then down again. And when I'm out in the open ocean, it only goes about 10-15 tops, though 15 is rare. I feel it's more a bug than a power issue, but who knows. They really don't give any info on if 20 knots is what you start with, or if that's what you can upgrade to. The boat info at the dock just says "top speed 20 knots". It would be nice if they started that lower, or gave you a "current speed" and a "top speed" just to keep the player aware of what's going on.
I just bought the second engine upgrade for the starter boat, and I now go about 30-35 knots. So I'm assuming 20 knots is supposed to be the starter speed, and it's just simply broken. They really need to fix this, as it's the first experience with the game, and it's not a very good one. When it takes like 30 minutes to drive to the first tutorial spot to set your lobster pots out, if not using fast travel, it can turn some people off.
Eh.. maybe. It doesn't feel good, if that's the case. I'm enjoying the game otherwise, though.
