How do you determine the distance between set buoys?
When you set a deepline or a crabster pot, there should be at least 500 meters between them, as I recall. But how can I measure how far away my last deepline is from my current position?

I throw them every 100m into the water and they are good 👌🏻
CazeGibson Oct 15, 2021 @ 3:02am
And how do you know what is 100m?
Merlin Oct 15, 2021 @ 3:33am
The game won't let you put the next one in if it is too close.

Yes, but that still does not answer my question.

I use the sonar to measure distance for setting pots.

Sonar is for depth, not distance between buoys on the surface.

However, you can note a crab on the sonar, set the sonar to 500m and as soon as said crab is to the left of the edge of the sonar, throw the next pot into the water. Or you throw the pot out as soon as you can. Because you can't set any gear below 100m. But you have to go so slow that your crew has finished the pot before you have covered 100m.

This ^ The game measures it for you as the game dose not allow you to set them too close.
So the game sets the minimum distance for the player.
As far as I know the only other way of measuring distance is on the map by setting the red flags to plot a course which I think is in nautical miles and yards or maybe it's meters so you could plot a course on the map to your preferred distance between buoys by using the red flags set it on autopilot then throw your gear in every time you reach the flag you plotted on the map if you get my drift.
Other than that the game dose it for you in the respect that it dose not allow gear to be set to closely

I still use sonar for distance. If if you look at the sonar you can set it for different distances. From 100m to 1000m.

What ?

A sonar system on a boat sends an ultrasound pulse towards the seabed.
It measures the distance between the hull of the boat and seabed also shows whats under the boat regarding fish and structure of the bottom of the sea bed with good clarity

As below

But you can remember an icon on the sonar and if it has moved from the right edge of the screen to the left edge of the screen, you have covered the distance you set in the sonar. So 1,000m to 100m.

Personally I just let the game sort the minimum distance out :lunar2019laughingpig:

Yes, you CAN set gear as close as 100 m, BUT - as I have read (somewhere) - it's recommended that you increase the distance to 500 m to get higher yield.

To save setting them so close together at 100 meters apart. I use the following method. I set a reasonable speed while dropping my buoys. As soon as I drop it I time how long it takes to effectively drop the next buoy (the game will let you know when you can drop the next one, look for the greyed out R or E to change to white). I then take note of the time it took and double it (say it took 60 seconds/ 1 minute). I then double that time and drop the next one when a shoal shows on the right hand side of my sonar. It may be longer than the time when doubled, but at least you are not over saturating the area with crammed buoys.

It also makes it easier (but longer) to pick them up, but at least it gives you time to get into position to pick them up (especially if you are using nets).

You don't have to double the time you could simply time and a half (1.5x) the run between drops. It works well for me and I usually get 3 Swordfish or Tuna on a line each time. If I am netting I am assured a good catch each net.

LOL Have you tried a 2x4. I hear it can numb the pain.
I know what and how real world sonar devices work.
