Trawling types?
Does anyone know the difference in the trawling types? I noticed the Hermes and the Lunar bow have two seperate trawling types, are you going to need to trawl in a different manner or is it just the different types of fish collected and that's all?

Hermes is a trawl doors over 150 meters I remember mainly being around 250 when I did it (on the last game). The fish type is the same as line fishing which is good and bad (the bad is it supresses the price on those fish or vice versa if you line or net fish. The good is you have to cut and stack them!).

Mechanically i.e the trawl game play is the same. Although they have added line tension for the dexter and that may have affected the game play for the big two trawlers.

do you have a recom for which one to try first? New to trawling and I just want decent prices, but skipping the dexter since its max hold is lower than my current ship. Would either ship be more or less beginner friendly?

Okay It depends what you want, if its just cash its the Lunar Bow but it is more grindy. I preferred The Hermes but you must have a trained crew in Machine gutting, Freezing and Stacking or that aspect will take forever. Note I preferred it because a few hauls was significant. Note this was from the last game I just have the Dexter in this game.

Note the Dexter is a great boat to try trawling but see the earlier topic about tactics to stop it getting overloaded. At its current cost its economy is fine.

Of note trawling has no gestation time so you can farm loads in game time but it can also destroy prices as well.

Here is a handy trawling guide for F:NA that may be useful and I think he has, or will have, a scanmar guide as well.

I was enjoying the Deckster, but now I can't stop snapping the lines. Most recently I began pulling in the net at 40%, from only 150m down, and it still snapped before I got it onboard.

Deckster is bottom trawling lol, it says they must be below 100m

How much fish you usually catch per haul with Deckster?

With Hermes you can snap lines also. But still it's awesome money printer tho i think Lunar Bow is better due to bigger capacity.

Tip for trawling: your ship sonar means nothing.

Snapped again this time reeling in from 120m at about 40% full lol...

A full bag is about 40000kg, with max capacity of 80k. Its much small than the bigger trawlers but also a lot cheaper so seems like a nice way to test the waters. If only the lines didn't snap so easily

What is your speed while hauling in? Lines should not be snapping at 40% like that unless under heavy strain. Maybe put the tension (TNS) displays on your scanmar so you can see them under load.

the problem is they fill up to 100% in the time it takes to wind in just a short amount. When hauling in the boat tends to end up going backwards so I try to keep it close to zero.

Oh well your post said they snapped at about 40% so I was like whaaaat? lol

easy way to avoid that, only drop to 105m each one, then as soon as you hit 60 per cent pull up, its mentioned in another post here and worked for me, not snapped any since, as you hit 100 it not longer collects and so your safe.

Yea, i guess I will just aim for fish when I get the bigger trawlers. Also I didn't have much success when I tried steering towards the shoals of fish lol. I understand it should take a long time for the net to reallign after turning, but even turning 30 degrees towards a shoal they never seemed to move towards centre
cbnnr Nov 2, 2020 @ 5:31am
Yeah dont bother trying to steer, the deckster does not have enough power to steer the net.

With Hermes you need to have doors down below 150m to catch fish so i always try to keep doors at around 153m so i can pull them up to stop catching fish. Or at least 1 door, other can be bit deeper around 158-160m.
Also you can stop engines when doors are 5m above magic catch depth unless you were like going full power or they drop below catching depth again.

My trawling is basically align boat in direction i want to go, start setting trawl with minimum speed. Once doors are round 130m down i put 1/3 throttle and then stop doors at round 200m warp lenght or sooner if trawl drops on top of big school. After that it's keeping doors close to cathing depth and keeping speed round 3kts.
My record with Hermes has been 97 tons without breaking warps.
