I do know some skills are capped / limited based on character race (a dwarf's strength could go up higher than an elf's type of thing).
You might try asking your questions over on the RPGwatch.com Drakensang forums. They're not as active as they were back in the hey day of the game, but it's still checked on by a few including some of the German players familiar with the PnP system.
Also https://ulisses-us.com/ is the US distributors of the PnP gaming books and you might find something there.
Dungeons and Dragons is pretty much the set point for PnP games. When Gary Gygax first developed it he passed around some copies to his friends to take a look at. One of the people that got a copy was Ken St. Andre who liked it but said it was too serious and complicated so Ken developed his own PnP system called Tunnels and Trolls which was much easier and more lighthearted.
At some point D&D made it to Europe and the Germans got a hold of it. Seems that while they liked it, they thought it WASN'T complicated / detailed enough and created the Das Schwarze Auge PnP system.
Being familiar with PnP D&D from the late '70's/early 80's I find you can craft your character much more with the Dark Eye system than you can with D&D.
1. Your max level is 20 or 21 I think
2. Your max skill level is capped based on your level and your attribute values
For spells its base value + level + 3
For skills its base value +2 + level + 3
or
best attribute related to the skill or spell + 3 + advantage/disadvantage
and it only counts whatever of those two checks is lower. So at the beginning of the game the first check counts and later on after you reach a certain level the second check counts.
Dont ask me what the base value is because its related to race / achetype also I really dont know how much an advantage/disadvantage is calculated into the formula.
Please note for weapon skills always only the first check is calculated.
Since there are 6 tables for skill increase (from A - F) its different for skills how much XP you need to increase from 10 - 11.
I never had any problems getting XP in this game. You will probably at least reach level 15 even if you play sloppy.
I have no problems, my question was more academic.
I just wanted to know why I can´t increase a skill more after I level up once I reach a higher level.
PS: I am german, its just that most posts on steam are in english so I thought I might get more replies.
PPS: Looks like there are also several editions of DSA.
I have finished the old trilogy once (with a guide, almost impossible without)
I will not do it again even though it was an interesting experiance.
But most classes, spells and skills were useless. I played it with 2 mages, 3 fighters and a dwarf. 6 mages would be easiest I guess.
Back then you could only improve on level up and you had to roll for every improvement.
So yeah, on a lv up my fighter got 2HP and failed to raise his sword skill.
