Wow, it a long game well worth the sale price. I bought it.
I think I spend about 50+ hours on the game -- it's been a bit so I forget but I think I have about 200 hours (replays) in the prequel, just on Steam. If you like this game, you should really like that one. I played them out of order too, not knowing, but that's okay.
Oddly enough I didn't like it at first because it was so different and I had to get used to the interface and such. But once I did, I had a hard time finding a comparable series. I'm a big NWN 1-2 fan and prefer it but this series is still a favorite.
Hope that you enjoy it.
p.s. I don't know why it is isn't advertised on the store page. But FYI

Fixed: Don't know what's up, suppose to show Drakensang River of Time
And if you do get River of Time, pick up Phil's Secret the DLC for it. It's only $2.49 more and add's some extra quests to River of Time.
And to the original question: The GameBanshee reviewer said it took him 60 hours to play through (mine's on a disk so I can't say my hours but 50+ seems right), so yes a very good deal for the cost.
That is because The River of Time is mostly loved by people who really like the game world from the P&P Role Playing System. But for players who don't know the P&P system the first one is often way better because it's longer, more awesome boss fights, more awesome monsters and dungeons, more quests, way better levels and no re-use of models and better made levels. The River of Time is only half as long as Drakensang The Dark Eye.
The River of Time is a good game until you get to Hammerberg and then the quality really drops off a lot. You can see they re-used a lot of stuff from the first game and didn't have the time or the money to make the later parts of the game great. And the dialogue isn't all that good anymore. Furthermore the political plot which unfolds after that maybe great for people who like the P&P system because some of it is concerning an important part of the P&P gameworld. But for people who play the computer game only it's just boring. For me as a player The River of Time was great as long as I explored Nardoret, finished my apprenticeship, went to the Elven Village, fought the demon and did the really good quest with the Werewolf in Nardoret. But after that I was very very disappointed.
That may be a bit of an overgeneralization. I have never played P&P or D&D on paper and still love R.o.T. I think too, playing Drakensang first can lead to disapointment in the newer one, because a higher bar was set. River of Time seems a bit more polished and the plot of Drakensang, has a bit more meaning if you play the *prequel* --
To each his own opinion, I guess it's like the Star Wars ordering system, though not as bad. :D
Drakensang: The River of Time is more focused where you're cast in more of a supporting role. Not quite the ego boosting style of the first.
D:RoT does fix some of the small problems from the original; adding travel points the main one.
I recommend reading GameBanshee's review from when it came out for more insight.
