is there a class that can have a pet, or tame animals or anything? or shapeshift?

No shapeshifting, but the magic class has a spell to call an animal or an elemental to fight with them. Type and length dependent on how many points you put into it.

One of mine had use of a fire elemental and another a badger (not a lot of points in the spell on that one).

There is a spell to 'calm' animals, but I only used it in non-combat situation so I don't know how it works in combat.

yep elf rangers i think maybe get a summoned pet, full mages can also like elementals or undead, etc. Thats about it, there aren't any "tamer" type characters.

Every elf can use The Helpful Paw but only caster has it from the beginning. The type of the animal summoned is based on level of the spell. If I remember correctly you can summon rat, boar, wolf and bear.

yep they make great distractions. Even if they aren't super tough summons like fire elemental can burn foes, and if you have the spell i think cold warrior, the one that keeps you from dying for like a minute or something, casting that on your pet/summons will let them say a distraction meat shield for a while even after they should be gone.

In case of Gwendala you can pierce your enemies with arrows while they are engaged in a direct fight with your animal.
