How does your level go up?

I know I have to use my exp and adventure points to upgrade, but when do I level up? Do I have to bank my exp points, then spend? Amazon lady is already 2, I am still 1

It goes up automatically, it just takes a while for your own character. I myself was a bit surprised by this. You don't have to preserve your experience points to level up, but you might want to do that later in the game if you want to learn a new ability (like Dodge, Shield Training etc.) from the trainers (you can see how much exp it will cost by right-clicking in the character sheet) or raise an attribute (you can see how much you need every time you click on the red ribbon in order to modify the character stats--the amount of exp is written in red or green besides every attribute).
