Need for Speed™ Rivals

Anybody on Linux having issue with EA App?
Even after the reinstall of the app I still have Connection Failed on the side where the friends list should be with the text below saying: We couldn't connect you to the other players. If the problem persists, try restarting the app.

I use Linux Mint and last time I checked which was few weeks ago, app worked alright. Now it just won't load the friends list, neither it shows my friends when I am in game.

App version is: 13.387.0.5900.

I have same error when I open it in the back while playing NFS Rivals as well as when I open it on it's own installed through the Steam.

Well then you could have skipped this post rather easily :)
Having the same issue here, I'm trying to fix it, but I can't really find any info online thanks for sharing

Thank you for posting. I hope the more of us here are trying the sooner fix gets found. So far I tried also using Lutris and it didn't help either. I am using previous version of Mint.

I'm having the same problem right now, trying to play NFS: Heat. It'd great if someone found a workaround for this, as I can't join parties to play with friends. :steamsad:

So what I can do is try to find new session and it joined me into the session of my friend that was set as public. You might get lucky as that, but it only happened with one friend so far...

Hope we get heard, it's so annoying not being able to add new friends as well.

I've had the same problem but found a workaround for now. For whatever reason the friends list works fine in the old Origin client, so you can install that in your Rivals prefix:

1. Download Origin from https://download.dm.origin.com/origin/live/OriginSetup.exe

2. Install it in your Rivals wine prefix. I did this by running the .exe with protontricks and selecting Rivals in the list.

3. Once it is installed, login and get it all setup. You'll quickly encounter a popup telling you to upgrade to the EA App. Quit Origin at this point (check it's not running in the system tray)

4. To suppress the popup and make Origin usable you will need "♥♥♥♥ off EA App", which can be found here (Steam filters the github link lol). Download the exe and run it in your game's wine prefix. Tick "Pretend EA App is installed" to stop Steam trying to reinstall the EA App on every launch.

5. Add `WINEDLLOVERRIDES="version=n,b" %command%` to your launch options. This appears to be required for ♥♥♥♥ off EA App's dll to load.

6. Launch the game. It should open Origin instead of EA App and your friends list should work. You might need to sign in a second time if Origin complains about your library being unavailable.

It's a bit janky and Origin crashes sometimes requiring a game restart, but it's better than public game roulette. Hopefully it works for you.

Thank you but I was just told yesterday Origin no longer lets the game go online (on Windows). So are you sure it still works?

It worked for me and a friend yesterday. Hopefully it hasn't broken more recently than that.

Oh I see. On which Linux distribution are you? Just making sure what are the odds before I bother friend to try this and then it turns out not to work for me :( .

Wanted to ask you: have you heard that Origin should get shut down sometime in April? Like servers will be. Just checking because this, even if it would work for me, would be in that case very short lived fix.
Good news, I have found a solution that allows Friends (and the whole of the EA App) to function fully, and allow playing with a group: https://nm.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1jegtfo

Edit: Fixed link.
