No fuel on second map. How to progress?

My train stranded without fuel on the second map. I read there is a refueling station on the third map but how can i get there without any fuel in the train?

You have two options, start the game from the beginning or send me a save game so I can help you. Also describe why you didn't have enough fuel before refueling?

I did not really understand how to refuel the train with gas canisters. I assumed i could refill on the way with the canisters by looting cars. I drove the train to the village on the second map and learned that i can not sip gas from cars and have to go to the gas station on the first map. the trip to the village cost me 150/350 of the initial fuel in the train, so i decided to drive back to the first map. The way back did cost me the rest of the fuel which was in the locomotive. I walked then to the gas station, filled up all of my three canisters and walked back, only to learn that each canister only gives 10 fuel. i spend a lot of time refueling the canisters at the gas station and stupidly walked back and forth to the train until the gas station was empty. With 100 fuel in the tank i tought that i could accelerate the train to full speed on the way down the hill on the second map and "glide" with an empty tank into the third map to the refueling station. unfortunately i learned that the physics dont work that way in this game and the train stopped on the hill on the second map without fuel.

Is it possible to walk along the tracks without having to use them and then get to the next map or back, or does a train absolutely have to be used? Then you could walk with the canisters to the first map and refill the canisters there...

Walking along the tracks is possible, but it is so incredibly boring to walk in this game and the carry weight capacity lets me transport only about 30l of fuel which does not get me really far anyway.

The main issue, I think, is that getting a tutorial hint on how to get fuel for the train would probably be a good idea.

I did read on the battery it said 'can expand the train's battery power' - but no hint on how, I tried putting it in the various compartments on the engine but there doesn't seem to be any interactable; neither did I see any electricity meter.
