Can I play with 2 or 3 players in local coop and go online to add a 4th player?

Hi there,

Of course!

You can create a new local player by pressing "LB"+“RB” with a controller in Classic mode of Quick Match and Custom Game, supporting up to 4 players in split-screen. Local games require multiple controllers, at least one keyboard and one controller for two players.

Then, you can invite a friend to your team or match with a teammate in the game.

Yeah, no. If you think you can play the game local, it's only the classic mode. None of the other stuff is working. So no split screen race or the other game modes. It's only ONE mode that works local.

yes but just in classic mode, smash you can play with a duo.
