What the title says... it is possible to play splitscreen with a friend on the couch while playing with others in an online lobby?

Yes!

When you join a custom lobby, if there are extra free seats, you could click RT on the second controller to add an local player. You will play the game in split screen then.

Yes, it would be nice if they added "split screen co-op" to the "quick match" search section. Please make this possible!

How do you do it not in a custom match? I just want to play quick play.
