I think I read somewhere that you can sell items on the market.

Assuming you just started out:

1. Selling tier 1~3 items for 5 to 10x it's value on the market.
2. Use your first 10 ascension shards on Scroll of Storms (T3) to get rid of it's jewel requirement and sell those to your customers for around 3.5k each and get the basic exp and gold required for the first few shop upgrades.
3. Choose 2 item categories and focus on those 2 up T5 or so. (Example; Heavy armor + scrolls) Then after that you can start diversifying other categories.
4. Levelup your heroes and dungeons then go sell ~T5's on the market

5.* Save up your gems either for gold boosts* or opening chests later on.
DO NOT WASTE GEMS ON THE LOWER CHESTS OR SHOP UPGRADES.

*Gold boosts will get you in a good town for the ability to massively expand and level your workers at a fast rate. Faster workers = more gold and items p/hour*

Also look for cheap resources on the market. Often you will find being able to buy the resources and sell with profit even to customers without having to waste time on dungeons.

Just figured out a strategy if this is a good one or not :

Right now I can buy "Limestone Chest" for 2 gems and selling it will net me 200k golds a piece (and yes the sell price degrades as I continue to sell it). Is this a viable strategy ? I do have lots of money to buy gems (but not doing it right now)...

No, that (100k) is very poor rate per gem. The range you should aim for is between 250k and 500k per gem. But I don't recommend gold boosting through gems too much tbh.
Gems will be very important to you later on especially if you want to be a f2p player.
Funny you mention the limestone chests, when I was around that beginner level I was able to buy the chests for 2 gems and they sold for 1m each so it was very easy for me hahah

I have make a video on this. Buy gold chest for 10 gems, and sell the chest for 2,500000 gold. 1 gems = 250k .

The link here (it's french but you can use translate) : https://youtu.be/lZbhgbz1sSU
