Engineer gets you guns (superior weapon blueprint) and reduced item break chances. But your items *will* still break. If you really like the game, if you want to pay in, if you want a little edge, then okay. But you will still be a pleb even if you buy engineer.
Scholar gets you wands (another superior weapon blueprint, maybe better than guns in practice with heroes, maybe?) and increased experience. But you're still going to be grinding *hard* if you want to push upper levels. Again, wands are nice, but you will still be a pleb unless you go in for heavy grinding and the monthly package.
Personally I figure I'm okay with being a plebian.
You can check out this fella on Twitch. He gave me some great advice. I was going into level 42 or something a week ago and I was like "wow I don't have enough gold". After taking his advice (and heavy grinding) I bought everything I want and am sitting on 120 million. Which is chump change for the endgame, but it's a lot to me and it's enough for my immediate future. Anyways check him out, he can probably help you out a lot.

(Note - he says to buy royal merchant too, but it's not like he's a shill. Legit, if you look at the stuff royal merchant gives you, it's a lot.)
He mentioned some videos on youtube by a different content creator, I forget who though.
Aside from that the 2 more recent dragon workers related to fusions aren't worth the cost especially since they're far more expensive than the other 2 workers mentioned above.
As a matter of fact items break much more than you'd expect from the percentages.. even with 4% items I had 2~3x breaking in a row even with a single round battle. I think the game is really deceiving in this regard. Don't get too attached to items even if they are epic+.
The only thing that matters is the monthly subscription bonus and just grind/play the game as much as you can.
*not including multiple round battles
