There are pixel art website that have amazing monochrome, 2 bit, 4 bit amazing sprites as well.
Opinion : Some sprites in curse of the moon 1 looks BETTER than in ritual of the night's RGBA 8 bits per channel textures and mid-poly count [4k-8k triangles] 3D models.
It's not even the bit count, but the art style in general, knowing that there are better (visually at least) comparable games out there, and most of them are way older then this one.
I think its debatable, Would be interesting to hear more opinions, If we had a poll in favor of which style, would be nice.
Wouldn't matter much would it, not like they are going to change their entire sprite base because of some rando's comment on steam.
Basically my point is i don't like doing things retro for the sake of retro, when there are better options available. Seems like i'll pass.
How does it stand visually as its own product? [You can watch on youtube if you do not wish to own this product].
Impossible really, since i'm quite familiar with the video game industry's humble beginnings to what we have today.
That's like asking me to forgot all technological progress that has been made in the last 40 years and asking me about the merits of a VHS system without any connection to other products.
Answer: it was good and popular at the time but completely surpassed in what formats (digital) and output resolution we have today.
16 bit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuyQ8fFpSAE
8 bit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btgi3TPL3AE
Graphics dont make the game better in any way. Thats why i prefer an sprited castlevania will it be SOTN or Aria over ROTN & Grimoire of Souls.
And this. Ritual of the Night is your SOTN while the 8 bits emulate the classics.
If they want to meet half way between CotM and RotN with a 16 bit style offering, I hope they start fresh with a new title in the Bloodstained franchise, with a different protagonist.
