However, I doubt most servers would want this. If anything, I can assure you that the official servers will never have voice chat.
Ever read a book and your brain paints the perfect picture of how everyone sounds and acts, down to their stutters and imperfections in their voice, but then you see the movie they made from it and it's jarring and nearly unforgivable how they present the characters?
You really want to play this game and hear the station captain sound like a 15 year old kid from the Midwest, or the clown sound like a middle aged guy from Texas? The immersion is shot, the role playing aspect is gone and now you're just crunching numbers and might as well be playing an action game all because you were too lazy to read a few lines of text.
you know, you are making a fair point. HOEWVER, you don't really know me and the problems i have with information overload at times.
you have to pay attention to the text chat CONSTANTLY, to see what actions which characters are currently doing, to see who is saying what, then at the same time tying those text messages to the characters on the screen to figure out who really said what, a constant back-and-forth of information.
add to that the problem of you being unable to move and do stuff while typing, and oyu get yourself a recipe for disaster for someone as smooth-brained as me.
and while i DO agree that the experience of reading a book and watching a movie about that book are fundamentally different from each other, don't tell me that you would not enjoy seeing your favourite characters from a book moving around in action on a big screen.
like sure, it differs greatly from what you have imagined for yourself. heck, it might even be a different story entirely (see lord of the rings), but don't tell me that movies are entirely unenjoyable if you give them merit on their own, if you manage to keep your experiences from reading the book and watching the movie apart.
i know when i was younger that i was able to absolutely devour books, and i would've loved this game in it's current state as is.
heck, i even played truckloads of "towns of salem" back in the day and that wasn't really a problem for me.
but stuff happened, and now i can't. so now i wait for any server to implement a proximity voice chat feature so i can run around screaming and doing stuff at the same time and baffle people with my accents.
i want to enjoy the mayhem, not immerse myself in it.
I wrote a longer reply, but I'll shorten it to this - use your imagination. Voice Chat removes that major, key element from any game its implemented in.
I'll tell you a SS13 story that simply can't happen with this feature implemented - I was HOP and the acting Captain. Station was falling apart as usual. While I was distracted typing and what you would call a recipe for disaster, an bug crawled into my brain.
Bug started to mess with my genetics and occasionally planted subliminal messages in my head, having a secret conversation with me while I was trying to perform crew duties like letting the Clown be an Engineer... This whole time, with another player messing with the inside of my character causing a bunch of random and stupidly funny ♥♥♥♥ to go down in front of random crew members, making me look like I was slowly losing my mind.
Now if that other player just went on a mic and started saying stupid ♥♥♥♥ like "Hey dude, I'm going to turn you into a cyber-monkey" in clear sight and sound of every single person in the room, that entire experience would have died then and there.
I have ADHD, reading text and focusing on moving and typing isn't hard. It becomes muscle memory. They're skills worth homing and practicing so you can enter a game like this and really get the full impact, rather than dilute it for yourself and everyone around you because you can't be bothered.
i'm not saying you are wrong.
i am not saying that the lack of voice chat is objectively bad, or that this game NEEDS PVC to function at all. on the contrary, this game is actualyl really popular for having text chat only, and normally everyone else is fine with it, and so would i.
but i am talking about an accessibility issue here.
i don't have ADHD. i don't have anything fancy, or even something i could put my name on. i just know that as soon as i start trying to parse the text chat in this game (or actually SS13, the original one,) all my comprehension of the english language flows out of the window.
in a complicated situation, where i have to parse the text to something happening on screen in real time, my brain WILL short circuit. it is an issue that only i have.
am i thinking less of you for prefering text-chat only? no, not at all. in fact, i respect you for having an ability i will never be able to attain.
will i be completely destroyed over the fact that this game might never have voice chat? absolutely not. you do you, i just can't play. gonna play some other games instead. SCP:SL is really fun aswell, even if it lacks the depth of SS14.
i am just maybe hoping that one day, one single server out of like a thousand might have something close to proximity voice chat, and if such a server exists (and someone tells me about it), then i will play this game on that server only.
there is no need to defend what you hold dear - i never attacked it in the first place. me wanting voice chat does not infringe onto your favourite playstyle at all, because there are many people around who think similar to you, and there will always be text-only servers for as long as this game exists.
i already know how amazing a text-only version of this game is. i just can't play it. no need to rub it in, really.
