FFXIV never was F2P, only a free test with all of the ARR content, but i you subscribe to the game, you loose the possibility to play for free.
I also played Never WInter, but as a free player, i was almost stuck by a paywall ( i was not able to upgrade my compagnons to be able to do some quests )
I personnaly like BU, but its clearly not a good MMO, it's just one of the rare Action Rpg MMO, the combat is good but feels cluncky and the ennemy patern not always readable, the story is here but i think it's bad ( At least it's better than BDO ) the dungeons are boring, and visually the game is not ugly but the art style is "dissonant", looks like multiple people was working on it but with no communication, the crafting feels unnecessary and the upgrade system, like BDO or other upgrade system full RNG are not fun.
That is it in a nut shell. Most people are clueless about fail stacking. The OP should try Black Desert, now there is some real pain. When an item improvement fails the item doesn't break completely, it drops a level and loses states and yes will eventually break. Heck just using weapons and armor they eventually break. I once spent 400,000 gold to get an item from from level 4 ( top level is 5) to level 3! Got to 4 then each time I tried tog get to level 5 it failed and dropped me back to 3. Sure there are items you can buy with real money to lower the chances, or do some quest for a week to attain a special item that has one use. Now each time the items drops a level it lowers the stats a bit which now have to repaired by using the same item for materials.
Want to upgrade a rare earring? Easy Peasy all you need is an identical earring to use as seed material and if the upgrade fails BOTH items are lost.
So while the upgrade system in Bless is not the best choice it is fart less frustrating that Black Desert
Maybe he gets paid to write.
