I'd love to see some DLC that adds a new biome or two, new relics, traits and maybe a new class or two assuming they can keep it all balanced, but that's a lot easier said than done. What they have right now is a polished gem as far as I'm concerned, and it'd be pretty easy to mess that up.
There's quite a few ways to increase the longevity of a game like this. Challenge runs, Iron Man, speedrunning, limited death runs, etc... this game is perfectly set up for such play. House Rules can tweak things far beyond what most games of this type offer without mods. But if you're all set, you're all set.
It's in a rotation for me with about a dozen other roguelites. If I only played this, yeah, I imagine it'd get stale after awhile as there's a lot less content than say, Binding of Isaac.
I'm happy either way. If they can make a DLC that enhances what we already have without poisoning the well, I'm all for it. I'd like to see everything you mentioned, but I won't be sore if we don't get it.
And that's being generous.
I'm only on NG+6 right now, but what constitutes endgame for RL2? I know the improved bosses and such stop evolving after NG+8 (I think) and I know it's possible to go much farther than this, but how far do you personally go? I ask because I have a couple of classes at my current cap (rank 17) and I'm at lvl536, and while I know it goes *much* higher than this, all of my classes still feel distinct and relics are still very useful.
I do imagine at some point it'll become similar to RL1 where the best thing to do is simply skip most of the enemies and chests and go straight for bosses if you intend any kind of further progression. I'm just not sure. I guess I'd probably start a new save file before that point.
Good news is they are planning to release one last jumbo lockdown supermax update which will knock the dust off that thang and comes with some new "special modes" that could be very interesting indeed.
I'm by no means saying that The Binding of Isaac has a perfect gamesystem but it is still far more addictive. Isaac's primary problem is that you either snowball or die pathetically when trying to get there. It is balanced around rewarding players that lose no (red) health with a chance to get fine upgrades or even the most powerful items, it creates an unnecessary gap between skilled and not so skilled players as well as punishing being unlucky even more.
While in RL2 weapons and classes play distinctively, it's not distinctive enough and most stuff merely only affects numbers i.e stats. 'Heal if', 'Deal more damage if', 'Increase X' &c. This includes traits, relics, equipment, runes and manor upgrades. There's only little that could be called a 'stunning upgrade' (unless it was overpowered like healing 5% HP) or 'visually stimulating'.
Most stat upgrades in Isaac are either a side-effect or limited to the item pool that appears after beating a floor boss while RL2 has like... at its best? Small bolts of magic.
Anyway, Would absolutely buy a DLC if they make some for this game.
Personally, I think this franchise does not need more games, 2 is fine, its alright. Need to know when to stop instead of overstaying your welcome. Better to have a new idea for a completely new creative indie game at the end of the day. The talent is there, hopefully some good ideas too.
In all these type of games I always crave for more possible bosses for each act, to make each run more unique, instead of having the same bosses in the same positions in a run. But somehow nobody does that in future updates or dlcs in roguelites/roguelikes. It is what it is... But makes me sad. Was my main issue in FTL as well as in other games of this type. Put more boss variety and RNG to make it better.
It seems,you are right,hhaha
