Priority #1 early game should be to upgrade your weapon and armor.
There are a lot of Animation canceling in this game
Like:
1: Dash Canceling (Dashing after a HEAVY attack, such as barbarian axe, to prevent the slowdown, which is demonstrated in one of the soul challenges)
2: Spin-Kick Canceling. (Anything can be canceled into another move, so you can do some pretty stuff, such as attack into a spin-kick into a spell, which is 3 attacks in less then 0.5 seconds.)
Its funny with a ronin, his attacks are really slow and have a long cooldown. (In comparison to the other melee classes)
But as ronin you can Attack into a spell, into a backdash, into his talent, into another attack, into another spell, into another backdash, and so on. (In the span of 2 seconds, better have fast precise fingers for that one.)
3: Spell Canceling. (Anything can be canceled into a spell, which works really well for melee classes, such as doing a fireball straight after a heavy attack to cancel the animation into a dash)
Or to spin attack with barbarian, into a spell to reset the spin, so you skip the landing animation, into a backwards dash.
4: Spin-Kick Dash Canceling. (Spin-kick to reset the dash count to instantly dash again)
Which means you can Dash-Attack for a 100% crit, into a spinkick, into another attack into dash, while still being in the air.
5: Rogue legacy movement attack special. (To attack and move at the same time, just like in rogue legacy 1, you move right, attack, then move left while attack is being played, thusly moving backwards and attacking at the same time in the other direction, to prevent enemy bumps and attacks)
There are probably tons more, but just ontop of my head, the game has a lot of skill involved, and the skill ceiling is high, so once you learn how to play this game, its really satisfying.
But I'm afraid the "Git Gud" is probably the only way of not sucking. (Doing all of these techs while dodging everything at the same time at the right heights and moments isn't that easy)
You are learning patterns and how to read a room. It's rehearsing a partition. Careful craft, habits that build up.
Those tips about cutting animations is true raw knowledge. But if you want a starting point, bouncing from ennemy or doing a jump backward to cut a dash crit while be strong.
Before facing the Estuary, you can unlock some power-ups by going Eastward. All the way to the right is the double-jump. Aim for that.
1) Find Lamech's door and the relics in he first area.
2) Explore in the most difficult direction, which for me is Pishon(sp?).
3) Try to unlock both doors in Pishon.
4) Enter Lamech's door (getting the full heal) and spank him.
5) Fight a Pishon miniboss or two now that I have full health again.
Another thing to do early on is to buy all the teleporter pads. It will speed up exploration, and if you find a relic that requires meat/potion to activate, you will have easy access to a bunch of breakable objects.
Don't go too far under 100% resolve.
Apart from farming gold, you can try to fight Lamech with a passive approach. That means don't try to hit him; play completely defensively. Just keep dodging until you learn the tells for each attack, and how to dodge each one relatively easily. Then start weaving in attacks when you see openings. Also, if you haven't been spin kicking much, try spin kicking over Lamech's head to help you maneuver if you get cornered. That made the difference for me beating him the first time.
Finally, if you're just starting out, don't sweat it if the first boss is tough. It takes time to hit your stride and become really comfortable with the game's mechanics. You'll get there
