You get empathy by beating the portal challenges. at the end of those you get a chest and the empathy is inside if you have scars unlocked. you can get up to 9 empathies per scar. On battle scars, they increase stats when you press on the + and on puzzle challenges, it gives you additional time.
Beating the challenge gives you a score, the higher scores give trophies. each trophie awards you with souls. battle scars can be completed with multiple classes, and each score you do will stack, giving you a total score. So be sure to beat them with several classes, you'll get the gold trophie eventually. (scars that are class locked only have one score, since you can only do them with the locked class to begin with )
doing a scar without empathies will give you a better score multiplier, but there's no point in worrying about that if you get hit a lot and take a lot of time to complete it, since that will lower your score. so use empathies, unless you feel confident, or can't be bothered to collect empathies.
The ball currency is souls, you can unlock cool stuff with it. Like additional upgrades for the castle, the ability to lock the the last heir's class, fable weapons for some classes and even a jukebox ! the merchants are in the attic ! (you can also trade aether and metal for souls, but I don't recommend it until you don't have any other uses for those ressources)
