Shield block is asinine nonsense?

In what situation would you rather take 40% less damage than simply avoid the attack? I've used this skill one time on purpose and can't imagine a time I'd ever want to use it again. What's the point?

EXACTLY! And, the skill is useless for BLOCKING damage in the fairy chest rooms. Like, isn't a shield supposed to block things?

It is 50% not 40%. And a perfect block reduces by 100%. If you don't manage to get the timing perfectly right 50% is still a significant damage reduction.

Perfect Block attacks, why should you get to completely nullify damage standing there with your shield out like a psycho?

the latest patch also made it much easier to time perfect blocks, so use it as a barbarian shout, basically.

It just sounds to me like OP didn't know about the perfect blocks. They not only block all damage, but also destroy projectiles in an AoE and deals damage.

the shield is absolute garbage
