The gacha exists, but you don't have pvp, or other competitive things that ruins your experience "forciing" you to be the best. You'll always the the best of yourself here, you play this singleplayer only.
If you care about story like me... There have been some emotionally gripping moments; but also some moments that left me thinking "Oh come on, you can do better than that". I suppose that over the years, devs have come and gone, and some are better at it than others.
Some of the character stories are absolutely vile, as Pom is a reprehensible sleaze, and the android woman (MELISSA, I think) will have your character literally k*lling herself... AND YOU HAVE TO PRESS THE BUTTONS TO HAVE HER STAB HERSELF REPEATEDLY.
While you can get free characters who let you finish everything, you WILL need to consult a guide to use them to beat most of the super bosses, and the game is designed to make you want to slot jocket your money away on the character summons, and/or spend your life obsessively grinding stupidly long quests that were designed to habituate/skinner box people into playing daily for weeks while updates came out.
There's some really good parts, especially early on. But the game gets insipid in how much it's dragged out and how obnoxious the characters get the further you go in.
