For me, importing mp4 files work. (Haven't tried AVI yet.)

When I import files after installing the program, a window comes up that activates the file format for that video. Maybe that window didn't come up for you?

I was looking into getting this as i got older software and blieve this is closer to PRO UI than the recent movie studio, cheaper on here then it is stand alone on Amazon.
It seems it doesnt like mp4s i recorded with Windows 10 (Windows Key + G) i record my video game footage, currently on Nvidia drivers 5.11
videos i recorded from my phone or download doesnt seem to crash software though, still testing this out.
