A cult game is more or less like a cult film, but unique in its own way: First, its virtuality. Cult games present a wider range of subject matters than movies, and display them in a more realistic if simulated way. Second, its interactive nature. Players can immerse themselves directly in a game, this immersion invoking a profounder influence upon them. Third, the long-lasting aspect of gameplay. Unlike movies that end in 1-2 hours, a game can often be played for a whole day, over several months or even years. A fans' love for a cult game usually lasts longer than that of a movie.
Well-known cult games
Planescape: Torment
BioShock
Prototype

Interesting I have never heard that term before in games. BioShock, Prototype, System Shock, Prey I would all consider to be Immersive Sims. While Planescape (I love Planescape) I would say was a CRPG... But I think they are mainstream enough not to be cult.
Something like Goat Simulator or Frog Fractions. I could see that as a cult game with a cult following.

A cult film in my book would be something like Rocky Horror even the Big Lebowski... Obscure or Unpopular with the mainstream possibly innovative and original. With a dedicated following.

Anyway I look forward to your game, it looks great!!!

The problem I have with the characterisaton "cult game" is that it requires a "cult", but I don't see that "cult". To call something as "cult game" doesn't create a cult out of thin air. The games mentioned above have never been called "cult games" by their developers, but have been given the title (justified or not) because a "cult" has grown around them.
Your game may deserve to be called a "cult game" over time, but not at or before launch.
I'm not criticising the game as such, but the marketing strategy to label a new game as a "cult game", and I may or may not pay for this game eventually - but if I do it's despite not because of the label "cult game".

:-)
There are books which are marketed as "best-sellers", even appear on best-seller lists - before they have been released. I'm not sure what's worse: These marketing tricks, or that they seem to work.

Don't worry, we have removed the phrase "Cult" from our page. I don't want to confuse you, and this may be because our understanding of this word is different due to different language backgrounds.

Well, English isn't my native language either, and I don't claim my command of this language is better than that of any other non-native English speaker.
My personal opinion is that products can be marketed in any way the vendor thinks is appropriate - as long as they don't lie, cheat or mislead their potential customers. In this respect there is nothing wrong with labelling your game a "cult game" (which isn't a standardised, well-defined characterisation, but means different things for different people). On the other hand, I guess you'll have to live with comments you may not like (no offense intended).
