I am a little curious

How many characters can you make to put on the island or is it just one or two?

first one you start with, 2nd one immediately after fixing the bridge (right next to forest base station and a battery), 3rd on after opening the gate with key and explore the city (you'll need a battery), 4th one is after you fix the generator and solve the simple hold hands to unlock door (battery inside there as well.)

From my game experience it's easier to focus on growing with the 1st girl to advance the story line. It's not a speed run anyways. My first play through was without cheats or scripts. Until the carry limit, fishing game and amount of grinding for collecting resources turned her personality into something I didn't like.

Just like real life, even growing/learning/living with one person is life long process (even then people are liable to do stupid, self-destructive and crazy nonsense). Unless you are running a business (aka strong pimp game); 4 is too many, 3 is doable if vigilant and attentive. 2 can work, if everyone is working together. aka cooking/crop cultivation for one, fishing and gather you materials for the other. While you craft, plant, harvest, build.

The STN:BR has a mod to add more (8 default but you can add more if you computer doesn't crash) but they just run around and jump on everything that moves including you.

There's no pod, just a terminal, on the 2nd island ... how to summon the 4th girl? The terminal has not selection for it on the 2nd island.
