FS2020 in VR (Valve Index)
Well I must say after everything that I went through to set up my FS with VR it certainly wasn't what I expected. Downloaded OpenXR, started Steam VR, plugged in my head set and hand controllers, started FS2020 and wham... there it was FS2020 on VR or should I say on a big screen in my VR head set... I'm now in the cockpit but my hand sets don't work, I have to use my Hotas joystick.

What's the point of having VR in flight sim when all I get is another screen which appears just as large as my 32" monitor and I still have to use the mouse and joystick instead of my VR hand controls...

Maybe I expected too much, I've been spoiled with Half Life Alyx me thinks...... :steamfacepalm:

VR will come to the public in December but I wouldn't expect it to include support for those magic wands.

LOL hadn't even noticed that part of the OP...most folks have a hard enough time getting happy with their hotas setup, I can't imagine VR hand controls taking the place of a joystick for flight control.

Hi guys, I too thought that it wasn't supported yet but I ended up on a site called Microsoft Flight Simulator and they had instructions on how to set up for all the major VR sets so I went ahead and did the setup,
For VR to be truly effective, one should be able to use the hand sets to control all the functions of the aircraft without the use of a joy stick Sandhill.

I guess I'll just have to wait a little longer, at least I've done the setup...

I stand corrected then...what sims do you currently fly in using the VR hand sets?

I don't fly any yet, I've only played Half Life Alyx which I found to be a great VR game and if you can do things like use controls in that game with the hand-sets (Knuckles) then why not a flight sim like FS2020...

Have look at this and see if it interests you...

You don't have it working in VR mode.

In VR Mode you get a cockpit view where you are "in" the cockpit, not looking at a big flat screen.

They have that functionality in X-plane 11. But I honestly cannot say that I recomend it. I also tried it in VtolVR and It just wasn't good. I mean I obviously am comparing it to a hotas so I will be bais and its probibly better than having to blindly use your keyboard and mouse, but then again literally anything is better than that.

I'm praying for motion controller support! I made a DIY MagTube VR Yoke and Stick mod!

Here's my Dad on the yoke: (Jump to 3:33 for takeoff and review)

My stick can be seen in the previous video on my channel, they both auto center with pneumatic pistons which gives flying a super awesome fluid dynamic feel

They probably won't have VR controllers. Not like Xplane or whatever.

I understand that may upset some. However what i don't understand is how "vr hands is a must' is such a driving point for consumers. Some say "oh in VTOL VR they do it right." However even those players will admit behind closed discord chats "yeah it's janky sometimes."

Those who've been playing Flight Sims a long time know you don't get the same amount of feedback from the plane without some sort of physical resistance from the stick/yoke. You might feel cool feeling like you're grabbing the throttle or flicking the switch, but is it worth misclicking the wrong button 4 times before you hit the right one?

Look, play how you want. All i'm saying is VR hands probably won't be in the next update

You thought you would misclick the wrong button 4 times before you hit the right one, because you thought that anything your virtual hand happens to collide with will instantly be actuated, with no button press required. Obviously that's far from ideal because it leads to numbers of accidental presses on your way to activating the control you wanted and feels completely detached from the movement you would perform in real life to actuate each kind of control.
You are so wrong. In VTOL VR they do it right again. When your hand is close to the cockpit panel, the virtual hand stretches out the index finger automatically. By moving your hand you can now aim at a button or a switch. Most importantly, it uses the trigger to perform the interaction.
For a button, press the trigger to press it.
For a knob, pressing the trigger will pinch it. You can now rotate your hand to rotate the knob, or press the thumb button to push it in.
For a switch, press the trigger to pinch it, then move your hand to flick it to a new position.

I don't think that guy actually played Vtol VR. I but I have to say, using the VR controls doesn't give you good feedback. You want a joystick that gives you variable tension where its loose in the middle and strong at the edges. You simply do not get that in VR which doesn't bode well for flying. I mean its a lot more sloppy in the controls because it needs to be due to the low degree of accuracy you get in VR. I tried it in x-plane 11 because i was curious as well, but I honestly think my stick is still just a better experience since I get feedback as to how far deflected the stick is.

I hated the way the motion controls worked in X-Plane, and so did my Dad (a licensed GA pilot) which got me thinking, and wrenching on a fix -

Check out my video for the Magtube Mod! I built flight peripherals (floor based stick and yoke) that auto-center and attach to VR controllers magnetically
