GPU using only 50% (RTX 3070)
Hello

First, my configuration:
Intel i7-7700k @4.2Ghz cpu
RXT 3070 Gpu
64 Gb DDR4 ram
500 Gb SSD
Seasonic gold 650W battery.

I play in 1080p.

My problem:
I have upgraded my system with a nvidia rtx 3070 gpu (I previously used the gtx 1070) and was expecting a huge overhaul in fluidity and fps. With the 1070 I used to set the graphics settings to almost ultra and it was smooth in most areas except big cities where it would top at around 18 fps. Looking at the benchmarks I was expecting a gain of around 20 fps.
But when trying the game with the same graphics settings I didn't find a huge difference, and it still stutters and goes down to 20 fps in populated areas with airliners.

By using MSI Afterburner in game (for example in Tokyo with A320 Neo) I noticed that the GPU usage was only about 50%. Also, in windows tasks manager, in the GPU section, it indicates that only 5% of the 3d process is being used, while I am pretty sure it was around 99% with my previous graphic card.

Overclocking my CPU doesn't change anything and it is only used around 50%, with temperature not exceeding 55 celsius degrees, so I don't think it is a bottleneck?

All the graphic pilots are updated (nvidia 461.09 version).

Also, I noticed that downgrading the graphics settings doesn't seem to make a big difference in terms of fps (only gained 5 fps from ultra to medium).

However, I would say that the clouds do look better than they used to with the 1070.

I really hope I can find help here, I have been searching on google but didn't find any matching solution.

To summarize my question: I am concerned that I reach relatively low fps (while playable) while my gpu seems to be only used at half its potential, and I don't observe a huge fps gain compared to when I used the 1070.

Thanks!

The game need a very fast cpu and dx 12. Upgrade your cpu. And disable the ai traffic.

Hello
So i7-7700k would not be enough? But it's not even half used (around 40-50%).

About dx12, shouldn't I have it already with my gpu? How to install it?
gaudintig 8 ENE 2021 a las 19:14
I checked, I have dx12 installed.

I will try disabling ai traffic.

But still I don't understand why it doesn't use more of the potential of my components which are both around 50% of usage.

MSFS doesn't use DX12 at the moment, will come with the Xbox release if I recall. Interesting you bring up the GTX 1070. I have that card myself and paired with an i7-8700 play at 1440p on a mix of high and ultra and it's peachy for the most part.

EDIT: Let me go take a look at usage.

So can I expect an improvement with the update to make more out of the potential of my graphic card?
Again, looking at the benchmarks I was expecting +20 fps at least in average, and so far I'm really disappointed, considering the cost! And frustrated to see the game actually uses only half of cpu and gpu.

Might need to get a more powerful CPU.

but my cpu is barely used (40-50%) also and does not heat up almost (does not even reach 50 celsius degrees) :steamsad:
why do you think so then? I'd like to know
gaudintig 8 ENE 2021 a las 19:27
the new gpu card cost me more than the actual improvement in my opinion so I would like to know before even considering also buying a cpu (and I checked benchmarks with more recent cpus and the 7700k still seems really fair, so is it a problem of compatibility, I don't know?..)

It's absolutely your CPU; the utilization reported by the Process Mangler doesn't take into account that only one thread is being used and the others are mainly idling. If you break it down by core usage instead of overall you'll see.

If you enable Dev mode in the game, one of the options in the toolbar that appears is an FPS monitor; it will tell you your various utilizations in game and probably tell you you're "Limited by Main Thread."

When DX12 comes along doesn't one benefit with more cores? Also, getting a better CPU would be a good investment for an RTX 3070.

Yeah, for me it says I'm limited by GPU (did the same when I played in 1080p). I just flew over Boston in the CJ4 with 30 to 40 FPS (looked really smooth though).

Omg still using only one core? I think there was the same issue with fsx right?
Do you know of any tweak to use other cores? Or a dev patch coming soon?

I checked in afterburner, indeed cpu 8 appears to be used more but not at max (around 80%), while other are about 35%.

Well for you, yeah, but for OP it's almost certainly going to be the CPU. I have a 2080TI and running the game on stock Ultra at 1440p leaves me Limited by Main Thread.

Hell in VR it waffles between Limited by GPU and Limited by Main Thread.

As Maki said, when the Xbox version is released they will have DX12 implemented which should spread the workload a lot better.

Ok, I tried the dev mod and indeed it's written "limited by main thread", but it's oscillating and also indicating "limited by coherentGTDdraw", do you know what it means?

here are some pics:

Also, I am surprised that my 7700k would already need an upgrade, it can reach 4.8Ghz frequency in OC and again is not used at 100% in any core.
- what cpu would you recommend instead then?
- what do you think about waiting for an update which will allow multi-core usage? do you think it will come at some point?
I mean, I don't have much knowledge, but it sounds very frustrating to have 8 cores and the game only uses one...

EDIT: so to sum up, my GPU is working properly and is limited by the cpu because the game does not support multi-core. BUT I can just wait this way (I mean it's not as fluid as I expected but far from unplayable) until dx12 is available, which should solve the issue? Am I correct?

I just upgraded this Christmas (before the game) to an i7-10700k and I'm not fairing much better than you. Not sure an upgrade in that department will do anything.

I'm sure it will come, they're still actively working on the sim, not much choice right now unless you want to throw in the towel and get a refund.

That said, Flight Sims are apparently notorious CPU hogs and 30fps for a flight sim is considered "good" from what I've been told looking into this myself.
