MSFS 40th anniversary edition - free?
I read that if you own MSFS already (I have version X) that the 40th anniversary edition is free. Anyone know about this? I'm avoiding 2024 for now due to all the negative reviews.

Nope, never heard that. It is on sale now on Steam and at the Microsoft Store. The closest you're going to get to 'free' is playing through the XBox account Game Pass subscription.

Ah, maybe that's what it meant. Thanks for the reply.

This what I saw (from flightsimulator.com):
Jun 12, 2022 — The 40th Anniversary Edition, a completely free offering for those who already own Microsoft Flight Simulator or play it via Xbox Game Pass…

To add to comment above, what you may have read is that if you already own the Premium or Deluxe version of MSFS 2020, the aircraft and and airports unique to those versions will be credited to the Standard version of MSFS 2024. Also, there was a pre-order bonus where one of the new MSFS 2024 aircraft would be available to MSFS 2020 owners.

FSX owners have never gotten a loyalty perk or discount.

MSFS 40th Anniversary was a free upgrade expansion for MSFS GOTY Edition, which was a free expansion for the original MSFS "2020." Basically, if you owned the game it was a big update patch.

FWIW, there never was a title named Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. It was released as Microsoft Flight Simulator, and later renamed to Microsoft Flight Simulator: 40th Anniversary Edition.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is technically a new game but it has all of the default aircraft from MSFS, GOTY, and 40th Anniversary Edition.

Yup, the "40th anniversary edition" was just a free addon/update that every owner of Microsoft Flight Simulator (meaning specifically THIS simulator that these forums belong to, not just any other one like "X" or "2000" or "for Windows 95") got for free and automatically. Being an owner of FSX however gives you nothing, not even a discount, for any MSFS edition.
