Go into your Steam settings > Controller > General Controller Settings.
Make sure "Generic Gamepad Configuration Support" is UNCHECKED. Restart your game, and you should be able to see your HOTAS in the options now.

im about to do this and will return with my results, it sounds promising because ive plugged in x2 different joysticks and an xbox controller, it only picked up the xbox controller.

This should probably be stickied because "Generic Gamepad Configuration Support" is checked by default with Steam, and this fixed the problem for me too. Now my stick is showing up in controls in game once I disabled it like you said.

I've followed the above advice.. steam setting controller general controller setting and unticked everything... restarted steam then PC, plugged in and out the hotas 56 controllers but still no controllers detected... they work in the game. but the onscreen messages don't align with any buttons on my hotas. any help would be great

Mines still isn't being detected by Steam. Windows sees it, but not Steam. Tried the above but Steam's settings aren't the same. Anyone find a current fix?

If you want Steam to manipulate your controller then you want to do the opposite of the solution to this thread. You should now reach the toggle directly from the controller tab in Steam settings.

Regardless of the configuration of the controller settings in Steam, my flight stick is still not recognized.

Thank you so much for this.
I just bought a VelocityOne Flightstick and could not for the life of me figure out why neither 2020 or 2024 would see it even though it registered correctly as a USB game controller.

I turned off Generic Gamepad Support and everything just worked.
It's recognized and has all the presets even.
