CTD on Safe Mode or Normal Startup
Hi all, been playing the sim since launch so working around download loops, disabling antivirus, deleting partially downloaded files so the file download can restart, troubleshooting this updater is no new task to me. This time I'm so lost.

Ryzen 5 3600 (bequiet cooler), RTX 2070, 32gb 3600mhz Ram XMP enabled, NVME m.2 500gb C" OS drive win 10, SATA HDD for video files, SATA SSD F" exclusively for DCS world and MSFS 1TB, 650 corsair PSU, B450 tomahawk max.

I've been away on work (4months no MSFS) come back a few days ago and 20gb update. Download it no prob, and CTD on splash screen with blue loading bar and "20 Bespoke Airports, New POI" screen.
Start again, "start in safe mode or normal", Community file is empty, but I'll try safe mode, same CTD at the same point, blue bar halfway loaded and "20 bespoke aiports....etc" on screen.
Try in normal mode, same CTD.
Disable antivirus, start in safe mode, 20GB update (again??), sure, download and CTD same spot.
Disable internet in Safe mode and normal same CTD.

Lets run the gambit,
Motherboard Bios Update, Nvidia driver clean install (after my last clean install a few months back), Run it, CTD same spot.

Fresh install, unintall via steam, delete all MSFS folder/files off C" OS drive, physically delete all files off SSD F", empty recycling bin.
90 GB later, it works, at the main menu, download 30GB of world updates in content manager, go for a 3 min test flight all is well. (antivirus & internet on)
Exit, restart CPU as a buttload of files were just downloaded.
Start MSFS, CTD same spot as described before.

Malwarebytes scan, no malicious files.
Unplug all USB devices except mouse and keyboard, CTD same spot.
Double Check custom pagefile, still good.
Uninstall all MSFS programs again.

Install Launcher to SSD F" drive, install game to F" drive CTD same spot.
Uninstall.
Install Launcher to C" boot drive, install game to F" drive CTD same spot. (this was my OG install path upon launch and had no problems until now.)

This was all done over the course of 5 days, if I missed a step or you have a good idea please let me know.
I'm taking any advice at this point.

Yes windows is up to date, and I have disabled "full screen optimizations" per online guides.

Start by going to

Steam / Help / System Information and cut and paste everything that appears into a new post here.

Run the sim and let it crash again.

Then go to the event viewer and find the event corresponding to the crash.

Open the "details" pane at the bottom and cut and paste the crash event details into a new post here.

Your System Dump looks good...

Event Exception code: 0xc0000005

Is often due to an application failing to read or write a configuration file.

In turn this may be because it lacks sufficient rights.

So try this...

Reboot.

Exit Steam if it starts automatically... wait for it to exit.

Right click on the Steam icon and select "run as administrator".

Once it is up, try running MSFS2020 again making sure you have no mods or add-ons installed. If need be, temporarily copy the files off of the Community folder so it is empty, until MSFS runs...

Also make sure you have absolutely NO overclocking of any sort turned on.

If the above doesn't help it is then time to look at your VC++ installations.

CPU restart, no programs running, quit STEAM, check clean Community folder, run steam as admin.
Run MSFS safe mode CTD
Run MSFS normal mode CTD

Go to Add/Remove Programs and make a note of every copy of VC++ you have installed.

There should be a single x86 and X64 version for each YEAR listed.

If you see more than one for a particular year, uninstall all but the latest x86 and x64 for that year.

You may also want to refer to the MSFS 2020 forum page where they talk about cleaning up the VC++ entries in Windows.

I had this exact problem. After looking around found that someone had tried adding "-dx12" to steam startup parameters. It fixed it for me but no idea why. Figured I would try removing it after next week's update and see if it is still needed for it to work for me.

ZombieHunter Nov 13, 2021 @ 2:53pm
Exception code: 0xc0000005

This code basically means 'bad things happened'. An exception was thrown that brought the whole sim down. This can be caused by a lot of things. In this case I'm going with a driver issue and or CRT or runtime's issue.

0xC0000005 is usually caused by drivers be they sound, video or otherwise. It can also be caused by null pointers in the code but since this is a release product I highly doubt that is the case. Unless the sim encounters an error and within the error handling code there is a bug that has not been found then I suspect the problem is somewhere on your system.

Thank you, good (care)methods regardless, had a double up on 2010 and 2013, uninstalled, restart CPU, MSFS in normal and safe mode; CTD.

Good idea, read some other forums and they said Steam upddate that has force -dx12 on startup, added
-dx11 to MSFS startup params no change, splash screen loads a bit further but still CTD in safe and normal.

As always thanks for the great advice, any new tips/pointers are still welcome. I will be uninstalling audio drivers/rolling back NVIDIA drivers and see if I can get it going. Will report back if I get it running.

I kept getting crash to desktop after SU6 in Windows 11, even with a fresh install of the game, until I disabled NVIDIA HDMI audio and every single audio driver in Device Manager, except the sound card I was using, which in this case is SoundBlasterX AE-5. No CTD since, and that was weeks ago.
Trustdesa Nov 14, 2021 @ 4:34am
This game was bad when it was released and they managed to make it even worse now, besides the realism, it stopped working for me for the second time... tried to reinstall it and it crashes then all of a sudden it lost like 80gb and is asking me to redownload them again...

Not just a bad sim but this beats any EA games in terms of how unstable it is... and I am not saying that lightly :D I mean... EA... not sure why MS still let ASOBO working on this thing really.

I dropped the development of scenery I was doing as it is really a joke...no other way of defining this.

@Solaron lucky you that managed to install it :D
