FS 2020 will not fix itself once the download dies. It gets stuck. You must stop it, go delete all files with today's date (or some of them) and then restart FS. The download will resume and b/c you deleted the file that was having issues, it should work.
I think this is a shared file issue where one thread opens the file and another tries to access it but cannot gain access to it. So it gets stuck and the download stops. I cannot 100% guarantee this is it, but it does have the appearance of that type of issue. It appears to me to be caused by some type of race condition between threads. I don't work for Asobo, I don't know the code, I've never seen one line of it so don't quote me on what I said. It is just my best developer 'guesstimate'. The 'guesstimate' I would make if I were assigned to fix such an issue and had never seen a single line of code and only had the steps to reproduce in front of me. My first plan of attack would be to check for thread race conditions.
All good advice..problem is a lot new users with issues may not know the trick about renaming the packages folder until after the fact. I do remember you mentioning that before though and it slipped my mind to mention it.
I tried a VPN myself and it didn't work. You just have to keep trying with pausing the download, closing the client and re-opening it.
The download server for MSFS2020 is just terrible. There is no way around this, it's not on the users end, but Microsofts. There is no troubleshooting fix, or different internet you can use that will fix the problem. The download server is painfully slow and that is something Microsoft has to fix on their end, but they won't, especially not now that Flight Sim 2024 is going to use Steam instead (thank god).
