Is MSFS 2024 an updated version of MSFS 2020?
Dear readers,

I've been trying to find a definite answer on wether to buy MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024.

Background:
Im a returning FS enthusiast who used to fly with FS9 back in the day.
But because there have been so many changes during the years, im confused now what to buy.

I am looking at buying a decent addon airplane as well, but they many have different specs.

When looking at addon "TFDI MD-11" i see it's compatible with MSFS2020.
But i cant find that version on steam, but i can find MSFS 2024 or another latest version.
But will this latest version than still be working with the "TFDI MD-11"?

In other words, am i correct to think that the currently offered MSFS 2024 is just an upgraded version of 2020?

I do realise that FSX is not, im that far.

MSFS 2024 isn't released yet.

Didn't really follow the MSFS2024 announcements too much but to what I read or saw or heard some month ago MSFS2024 is more than just a simple upgrade allowing to include more additional environement simulation stuff (some passengers would be my dream)
but old FS2020 sceneries and airports (don't know about the planes) should still work and don't have to be rebought,

I don't know about airplanes buying on steam. MSFS has an own integrated market and at least I buy from there (microsoft acount) but then I have the microsoft version not the steam one. steam however is just a launcher so I guess thats the same for all.

However when it comes to aircraft the free flybywire A320neo is awesome and all I personel need. I am sure in case it is not compatible flybywire will make a MSFS2024 modell too.

This forum is for "MSFS2020". Microsoft never named it that way, the community did.

MSFS2024 is a "new version" which in a technical sense is an "upgrade" of this version in the same way this version was an "upgrade" of FSX. FSX was the starting point for this game and parts were improved and rebuilt. Same is happening with MSFS2024.

Thanks guys, i think i have the right info now.
Sorry for any confusion from my part.

It looks like 2020/2024 (2024 it's not released yet, i understand now) are practically the same engine/software, but getting renewed over time.

I think i will just deepdive into MSFS the current version.

This sim is not related to FSX in any manner (under the hood wise). There is no ESP code within this sim whatsoever.

FSX was the starting point. All the code was imported according to the developers.

Obviously parts were stripped away or upgraded, like the rendering engine and over time things have further changed but there is still FSX in this title. The evidence is also there within the game.

It looks like some BS move to get ppl to buy Xbox and ♥♥♥♥♥-pass and probably brings nothing new. If MS is good at anything its pushing games like Starfield...

Technically FS2024 will not be made from scratch, it will be largely based on FS2020. Most addons should be compatible. Third party developers will likely offer their products for both versions and I doubt that they will charge you again for the same product upgraded for 2024 version.

I did buy MSFS, the current version, but i cannot even install it. I have 170gb free, but i cannot free more at the moment. It's that bad, i asked for a refund for now. Maybe one day il get a larger disk.

Hmm, probably depends, I know Carenado were pretty bad from the FSX to P3D upgrade, they did charge a small Fee for the swap, but I didn't have any other problems with other Developers.

At the end of the day, it probably depends on how much extra work the 3rd Party Developers need to implement to the new Version. I do suspect that the File system will mainly be the same, so I would think everything would be free of charge, but we'll see soon enough.

Uh 170GB is a little less nowadays. And best is to have it on an SSD.

MSFS2020 should be called FSXX /greentext
