These companies always make such promises like how they want to keep supporting the old version but you would have to be incredibly naive to believe it.
It's just lip service when they know exactly that they are making a controversial announcement.
They, as well as all 3rd parties, will focus their resources on where the money is, i.e. the latest version.
R.I.P MSFS 2020. In spite and against a long term support "promise". That's how it is.
2024 is going to have to standout quite a bit from 2020 for me to even think about purchasing it. And how do we know there won't be a 2028 that will ruin all your stuff from 2024? This isn't 1990 where we have CDs and DVDs and limited access to patches and content. Content can be streamed and downloaded and the game can last a very long time. So this move seems very odd given the current 'environment' of modern games that are cloud based. Very odd indeed.
actually.. its very likely there will be.. 2027 will be the 45th anniversary if i counted correctly right ?! so they will use this to rebrand the flight sim 2024 as 45th anniversary edition same as they did with the current flight sim. before that there will be a "game of the year" edition too -.-
i'm really disappointed and feel betrayed.. i didnt even purchase anything on the market but i still think its not acceptable what microsoft is doing here because they very well could have added everything into this game, exactly as they promised (10 years of support). instead they used all of us as beta testers for their garbage product that never ran well and now they will release a refined product and expect all of us to purchase it again ? well.. i'm not going to unless it really is super polished this time and runs like butter, has no bugs etc.. and we all know how this is not going to happen :(
For gamers it started with the 'Games for Windows Live' debacle, continued with the Windows development and now this.
Although it's graphics might look a bit outdated, it's still one of the most realistic flight sims around, and It's been continiously improved since 1993.
So for less superficial people this is a very good substitude for MSFS and way less of a hassle
I'm glad you're happy with it though mate, this is not a dig at you but for someone like me, DCS does absolutely zero as I'm not interested in combat aircraft....
If they do create a world map if will be good for current users though :)
Irrespective of how good the physics and realism are, they did zero to try to compete with MSFS.
MSFS's big trump card is the streaming graphics. XPlane looks poor in comparison and if you want to improve them, you need a TON of storage space, plus you need to pay for the best quality stuff (I know you can do ortho but it's time consuming and meh at best).
Where XPlane wins is if you're flying Airliners because from 30k feet up, the ground looks ok but for anyone who wouldn't touch an airliner with a bargepole (someone like me for instance) then XPlane just ain't worth the drop in graphical fidelity, that you get when flying GA aircraft.
I'm amazed that Laminar didn't try to join up with Google to stream map data, but Austin is more interested in making sure XPlane works on his beloved Mac....
Strange that they would announce so early prior to release and as a surprise to not only the consumer but all the third party developers who make a living creating content (and thus Microsoft managed to create their own FUD).
Now 2020 has its own competitor in 2024 and although MS says compatibility will be ok (in 2024) for their stuff, we all know that is to be taken with a grain of salt as every update release has managed to break things.
I wonder if there is any point even buying things for 2020 anymore ???
Cheers
Ich you bought it ingame, it would be tranfered to the new version automatically.
PMDG and Fenix said they werent even given a heads up about this.
Microsoft should take the word Simulator out of the title and just go back to calling it Flight...
I also fear investing any further into 2020 could be a mistake. Microsoft struggled to maintain 2020 and many bugs still remain. When they launch their golden child 2024, the appetite to maintain 2020 will certainly diminish. I don't trust their statement that content can be used in either platform. This might be the case for a short while, but when developers strain to adapt that content to utilise new features, they will need compensation for their efforts. The whole situation has no rationality to it. Microsoft clearly acted without any consideration for existing developers, as they were also in the dark.
Calm down kids, it's going to be fine.
DCS modules are expensive because they have FAR more fidelity than MSFS planes. They take years to make and they take months to learn. Usually multi-hundred page manuals. The good thing about DCS in the future is that they are going to pull civilian flight sim fans over with their cargo planes and helicopters that are in the works. The new world map will change everything.
