The commitment was to the flight sim in general so addon makers would commit to making content. The question is what future features will you not get if you don't upgrade to the paid version.
I do expect far greater Aircraft for 2024 by then.
Where is the issue in getting more gameplay, compared to MSFS 2020?
If the "career modes" are done well, I see them as a full-price DLC addon in 2024, but I now understand the frustration!
If they do not change some fundamental underlying tech, they should stick with 2020 and add the new stuff as optional purchases.
That's merely a misinterpretation made by some uninformed individuals based on the FS2024 announcement.
-Manual Cache is broken and the same data has to be streamed over and over
-Marketplace is broken and people stop purchasing
-When users don't know how to fix a repeat CTD and reinstall the program for the 4th time.
It's not the only way. They have a marketplace for a reason. As someone else pointed out, it would be great if it would actually work. Not just for the customer but also for Microsoft/Asobo.
Personally, I would have also been fine with a different revenue model. They could have had annual passes for the world updates or sold them individually for a modest fee (like €9.99 per world update). If delivering the things they gave us for free was not profitable then change the delivery method. Simple. There would have been many options.
And if the marketplace does not cover the expenses now then why should it when we have a new 2024 version?
Besides, does anyone have any hard evidence that MSFS is/was a non-profitable service for Microsoft and if so to what extent?
Microsoft have made a net profit (yes, NET PROFIT) of US$72 billion last year. I'm sure they could easily keep MSFS running for ages, e.g. as a test bed for their cloud services.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure the REAL reason why they are doing this 2024 version is because they want a new SKU on the GamePass.
The next year is going to be Microsoft finally taking the hammer to Sony. They will have Starfield as a super-juicy exclusive and many, many attractive additions to GamePass are on the horizon. A shiny new version of Flight Simulator is supposed to help attract new meat to their subscription model. Simple as that.
